GUYS HELP- syncing issue and I lost my anki cards

Hi guys I need help asap please!

I have 3 devices.

I was using my laptop device for the past week and had been making notes on them. But When i logged into my other computer and synced it I noticed a deck had missing notes/subdecks. I quickly checked my laptop again but the notes were still there. I created a local back up on my laptop just in case. Pressed sync, then the notes disappeared just like my computer, so my laptop and computer are both on the same page with missing notes. My ipad in the same case too.

The question is should I revert to the backup i made on my laptop that I made just before syncing? my laptop is new so ive only had it recently. My computer on the other hand has always been the one I use to make anki and add images etc. I have made notes on both laptop and computer. The question is if I revert back to the backup I made just before syncing on my laptop, will it remove all the photos I have added to my anki? I dont really know what to do guys. Or should I revert to a backup from a week ago on my computer?

Thanks a lot!!!

One more thing! If I click on the deck where the notes have disappeared my anki starts crashing out by a continuous pop up saying ‘deck not found in limits map’. I can’t shut down or close the anki page without having to shut down my laptop or computer now.

If I just use the BROWSE decks option and click on the empty deck I can see the cards are still there now. But the anki is still crashing out if I CLICK on the deck.

this has never happened before and I have no idea why this has happened so any help would be appreciated

The first thing you should do is restore that backup on your laptop, so that you can recover what you lost – Restoring an Automatic Backup (Recovering from Data Loss) - Anki FAQs . Then run Tools > Check Database to make sure that database is healthy.

If the laptop version of your collection is the most complete and updated, you should sync. You’ll be given a one-way sync notification, and you should upload to AnkiWeb – then on your other devices, you’ll choose download to accept that version.

However, if you have changes on multiple devices that are not yet synced, you’ll need to step more carefully than that and preserve those changes before starting any one-way sync process – Syncing with AnkiWeb - Anki Manual .

Going forward, to keep your devices in sync, you should only have changes on one device at a time. The best way to do that is to sync when you open the app on a device, and sync when you close/leave the app on that device, every time.

Thank you so much for your reply.

All my devices are synced and have the same cards and the same deck of cards missing.

I’ll revert to the backup I made on my laptop then, and follow your instructions.

Just to make sure, If i revert to my backup on my laptop, will I loose images/photos I had added to my anki cards?

Thank you once again!

The backup includes your collection database, but your images are stored in a separate folder. As long as you haven’t deleted them on any of your devices, they will continue to be synced.

If you are concerned about that, you can make a copy of your collection.media folder, or you can export an APKG/COLPKG of your collection (including media) before you restore.

It’s (deliberately) hard to get Anki to abandon a media file. When you’re all restored and synced across all devices, you should consider running Tools > Check Media, and clean-up any unused media files that are still hanging around.

Thank you!

I managed to revert to my backup before things got deleted which is great!

My global heatmap shows what I reviewed too however in my individual sub deck heatmaps when I press on a day, it shows no cards.

Just wanted some reassurance if this is okay ahah

Thanks a lot for all your help <3

I can’t think of why that would be. Have you run Check Database lately? That will often tidy up your heatmap (which is just relying on your actual review history for each card).
