FSRS 6 – Seeing cards too Often

Hi Friends,

I’m currently using FSRS 6, but I feel like I’m seeing cards far too frequently, even when I mark them as Good. For example, I reviewed a card today that I definitely knew well, and ideally, it shouldn’t come up again for a few months—but the next review is scheduled in just a few days.

I’m using the AnKing recommended settings. Has anyone experienced something similar or know how to adjust this? I haven’t been able to find a clear answer online.

Thanks in advance!

Regards

You can adjust desired retention. Higher = shorter intervals, lower = longer intervals

Desired Retention is how you adjust your interval lengths. But I don’t think “gut feeling” is a good way to judge intervals.

If you open stats, and look at the true retention table, do you see retention rates much different from your desired retention?

Do you use optimise at least once a month and do you have seperate presets for different material/decks?

Hi Friend

Thank you for the reply.
I have a deck of around 30 thousand cards. I just feel that since I switched to Anki 25.02 Beta with FSRS 6, the intervals feel very short. Mind you, I have the actual interval duration hidden. But the cards I truly know well that I mark as Good or Easy, seem to keep showing up after very short intervals. I have one Deck filled with Subdecks (cardiology, pulmonology etc) but do the cards from the main deck, and all the subdecks have the same preset setting

These are my current True Retention stats:

One thing to add is that I’m seeing similar issues posted on Anki Reddit

If you show us the Card Info from one of those cards, we might be able to help you figure out what is happening.

You should also give us your FSRS parameters as text (not just your screenshot).

Potential issues I can see already –

  • You don’t have any learning/relearning steps.
  • Your parameters indicate this material is very, very challenging for you.
  • You edited the “Historical retention” field. Unless you had a very good reason for doing that, you should change it back.

Anki 25.02 Beta doesn’t support FSRS-6. FSRS-6 is introduced in Anki 25.05.

my mistake, I’m on 25.05 beta 2

I mean, if his retention before FSRS was not 90%, why not change it? Though it doesn’t matter anyway, unless “Ignore cards reviewed before” is used.

Hi Friend

Thank you for taking the time to respond

Preset:“Internal Medicine”
Reschedule cards on change: Off

  1. I don’t have learning/relearning steps as I had understood leaving it blank allows FSRS to calculate the optimal steps itself. Would you advise I put this back to the default settings?
  2. Definitely some challenging material, but I think more an issue with consistency, poorly made flashcards etc. All issues I’m seriously working on improving now.
  3. I edited the historical retention as it seemed my older retention was much lower, so felt the default was too high.

Here is one example of a card that I feel is now appearing too often.

Thank you for the help!

  1. You don’t have to put back the default steps, but you should choose your own. Leaving them blank isn’t recommended for most users, because FSRS doesn’t know how to model near-term memory.

There’s a lot about this review history that doesn’t make any sense.

  1. There’s no Learn stage at the beginning. Is there more?

  2. You’ve got tons of Manual review logs that moved your due date without a recorded review. They pre-date FSRS, so I know they aren’t rescheudules. What are those? Set Due Dates? And you’ve got Again grades that aren’t lapses into Relearn. This is a bit of a mess. What happened?

  3. You’ve been using FSRS on this card since 2023, but your only recorded review was in Sept 2024, resulting in a 2y interval. At some point, that was updated to a 2d interval – was that a reschedule using the Helper add-on?

Hi
Definitely a mess yes - made lots of mistakes previously, with inconsistency leading to a backlog, then trying to use set due date to future dates to balance the load out. I’m slowly getting better!

I’ve also used the reschedule feature with the helper add on

Is this the learning stage you’re looking for?

According to this review history, of the last 10 times you reviewed this card, you got it wrong 8 times. There is a period of two and a half years where there was not a single successful review. So it doesn’t seem surprising that FSRS thinks this card is difficult and needs to be reviewed more.

Ah, it looks like you used the “Remedy Hard Misuse” feature in the FSRS Helper Add-on (or a similar add-on), and replaced all the “Hard” ratings in your history with “Again.” So now it looks like you failed this card almost every time, rather than rating it as Hard most of the time.

Is there any way to fix this friend?

From the Tools menu, choose FSRS Helper > Remedy Hard Misuse > Undo. Then the next time you review or reschedule your cards, they should use the original review history.
