Feature Request: A Separate Mode for Learning New Cards

Hello,

I have been using Anki Note and Anki Mobile regularly, and have found it extremely useful. It has made it much easier for me to review cards throughout the day and retain what I have learned over time.

I would like to suggest one additional feature.

Anki Note is highly optimized for reviewing previously learned material. However, I feel that it is less intuitive when users are encountering and learning a new set of cards for the first time.

During the initial learning stage, users may not need to evaluate each card using detailed options such as Again, Hard, Good, and Easy. Instead, it may be more useful to classify cards using two simple choices:

  • OK: I know or understand this card.
  • Not OK: I do not know this card yet and need to study it again.

After the user completes the first pass through a deck, the cards marked “Not OK” could be shown again in a randomized order. During the second pass, cards marked “OK” would no longer appear, allowing the user to focus only on the cards they have not yet learned.

This process could continue until all cards have been marked “OK.” It would provide a simple and efficient way to learn unfamiliar material before beginning the normal spaced-repetition review process.

To distinguish this feature from the existing review system, I suggest adding a toggle or two separate buttons on the deck screen:

  • Learning Mode
  • Review Mode

In Learning Mode, only the OK and Not OK buttons would be displayed. In Review Mode, the existing Again, Hard, Good, and Easy buttons would remain unchanged.

This would preserve Anki Note’s current review system while also providing a more intuitive way to study completely new material. By seeing difficult cards several times during the initial learning session, users may also be more likely to remember them when they later enter the normal review cycle.

I am very satisfied with Anki Note and appreciate the work that has gone into developing it. I hope you will consider this feature for a future update.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

I’m sorry, what is Anki Note?

[I’m going on faith here that when you say “Anki Note,” you’re talking about the desktop Anki app. I don’t know where you’re getting “Note” from though, because that’s not part of the name.]

What you’re describing is how the Learn state already functions in Anki, if you have 1 learning step – Deck Options - Anki Manual . The main difference between the current behavior and your suggestion is that all 4 buttons are available for grading.

You haven’t made a very compelling case for why they shouldn’t be displayed. Interestingly enough, a long time ago, the Anki scheduler did display fewer buttons in Learn/Relearn. That was before my time, but presumably the scheduler was updated to all 4 buttons for good reasons.
