Error sending request for url: other ideas?

I have tried the following (see below) but still getting this error. Anything else I can try?

-Tried using with and without VPN
-Updated my Mac Os
-Changed network timeout to 120 seconds
-Updated to latest version of Anki; also uninstalled anki and reinstalled
-Double checked, and I have no firewalls
-Attempted on multiple wifi networks

If it’s not working on multiple networks, that suggests it’s something on the device that’s causing the issue. You’re definitely on the right track with the things you’re trying – Error establishing a secure connection when syncing - Anki FAQs . Also check your antivirus settings, and iCloud private relay (which is a VPN too).

Same issue here. iOS version 18.4

This is a related forum entry, but those steps did not resolve the problem for me

@dermki123 and @robromijnders –
In addition to the above, check this other thread too – Cannot sync anki with new anki update on mac - #6 by Danika_Dakika . The user there could reach AnkiWeb in one browser, but not in another, which might be a sign of where the issue lies.

Thank you for the help @Danika_Dakika. I tried and web access works on both chrome and safari.

If ever the firewall was an issue, could you alter the error message to display the URL? At the moment, I can’t know which URL is trying to be reached. If one knew the target URL, one could browse the same URL in the browser and see if firewall was really the issue. The current error message is quite uninformative

I’d like to point out that this is documented:

But I agree it would be better to see the link Anki is trying to reach.

Thanks @Anon_0000 . There is no firewall on the iPhone at all. So, now I know that *.ankiweb.net is the target URL, I wouldn’t know which firewall or the like I should test for. Is there any way to get more details from the error message?

Since this is on your phone,

  • Have you tried both connecting via cell data (with wifi off) and connecting via wifi (with cell data off)?
  • Have you check iCloud Private Relay? It was mentioned in the other posts, and it’s really a VPN.

Just to clarify – at that point, it seemed like you didn’t know what url to try. Did you check web access in general or did you specifically check https://ankiweb.net in both browsers?
