Enabling Math Symbols in Anki

How can I enable mathematical formulae be shown inside Anki when I copy from a book or a website into Anki without it having to be distorted or be transformed into some weird substitute

It really depends on what you have in your copy buffer. Generally anything in mathematical notation is starting out with a lot of formatting, so if you can capture that you should be able to paste it. But because it’s so formatting intensive, it’s very difficult to capture that.

If you want it formatted correctly inside Anki, you’ll probably need to enter it in MathJax notation. Math & Symbols - Anki Manual

You can view the source code for a website. Most browsers support doing that. There are also online tools to do the same.

But I think a lot of websites use .svg images for this so maybe it won’t work for you. Most PDFs are really inaccessible.

I think you can try AI tools though. If it’s simple copying material, it’ll work well. I’ve not tried it myself but I use chatgpt whenever I need to type a Unicode character I cant. They’re generally good at it.

But i tried copying from chatgpt into Anki and it worked miserably. What do I need to say to chatgpt so that the math formulae don’t get distorted once I copy them from ChatGPT into Anki

You can try having it write the text for you in MathJax notation and copy it into Anki that way. MathJax is standard, and widely used, so there’s a chance ChatGPT is smart enough to do that right.

Try giving it some examples of MathJax. It’s called multi-shot prompting. ChatGPT should know the formatting you expect to work for Anki. You can do that in the custom instructions.

In proper multi-shot, you will be uploading some files and transcribing yourself using MathJax in the initial prompt but I expect that to be not necessary here.

Personally I use: https://latexeditor.lagrida.com/

Easy enough to insert the code and 99% of the time it works just fine. Gotta be a little careful about brackets but that’s about it
