Downloaded Anki deck won't open but I have the latest version

I have the latest Anki version downloaded (Version ⁨24.06.3 (d678e393)⁩
Python 3.9.18 Qt 6.6.2 PyQt 6.6.1). My friend has created a deck that she is happy to share with me so I have downloaded it on my laptop but it will not open in Anki.

The error message “Unable to read file. It probably requires a newer version of Anki to import” but I do have the latest version and I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, as well as restarting my computer.

I have also tried opening while holding shift to disable Add-ons and this did not help.

Other people have been able to download and use this deck so I’m not sure what the issue is on my end.

Does anyone have an idea of what’s going on or what I should try?

Might be your friend’s Anki version. Can you ask them to update and export again?

Please make sure the legacy import/export code is not enabled in the preferences screen.
