Unable to read file error message

Hello,
I am trying to import a friends anki deck and i keep getting an error message “unable to read file. It probably requires a newer version of anki to import”

We are both on the latest version of anki and both use mac. I have already tried disabling the special fields add on. No luck. I cant find anything online that has worked. Please help!

Thank you.

  • Did your friend also have add-ons disabled when they exported the deck?
  • Have you tried importing with all of your add-ons disabled?
  • Did you friend select “Support older versions” when they exported?
  • Do you both have Tools > Preferences > Editing > Legacy import/export – turned off?

Hi thanks for the response. I was able to get around this by sending the downloads to a different friend, and had them resend them to me with the “support older versions checked”.

I dont know about solution 1 or 2 because they are from upper classmen who sent their decks in a google drive.

Just for my understanding, Does legacy import/export handling have to be turned off for imports to best work?

Thank you for the update! It helps to know what works.

For most users it’s not necessary, and it can sometimes be an impediment, so it’s best to leave it off. Preferences - Anki Manual
