Sorry, I should’ve said it in my initial post, but I read the manual before asking my question, and couldn’t understand the difference. Perhaps it’s the “cards with larger steps” that confuse me the most, but really, I’d appreciate if someone could give me a better explanation than what is in the manual
Cards with larger steps have learning steps that cross a day boundary. These steps can be configured from the deck options. This kind of cards is treated specially by Anki.
As far as I know, learning cards with small steps (less than a day) are always shown before new and review cards. The “Show learning cards with larger steps before reviews” option will make learning cards with large steps appear before reviews. The final decision as to when they are shown is also controlled by the “Mix new cards and reviews” option. I think choosing “Show new cards after reviews” will make them appear after learning cards with smaller steps and before reviews, while choosing “Show new cards before reviews” will first show new cards (after learning cards with small steps), learning cards with large steps, then reviews.
Yes, it helps. So, as I understand your explanation, when studying, by default (i.e option “Show learning cards with larger steps before reviews” is not checked ) cards will be shown in this order :
Learning (and relearning) cards with small steps → new cards → review cards → Learning (and relearning) cards with large steps
Then, if the option “Show learning cards with larger steps before reviews” is checked, the previous order is changed into one of the following way :
1- Learning (and relearning) cards with small steps → Learning (and relearning) cards with large steps → new cards → review cards
2- Learning (and relearning) cards with large steps → Learning (and relearning) cards with small steps → new cards → review cards
3- Learning (and relearning) cards with small steps → new cards → Learning (and relearning) cards with large steps → review cards
And then depending on if one of the options “Mix new cards and reviews” or “Show new cards after reviews” or “Show new cards before review” is selected, that order is again changed.
Is my understanding correct?
Can you point me to some part of the documentation where the order the cards are shown is specified?
I really don’t know anything about programming . I think this kind of information should be put in the documentation in “plain english” to understand how all these settings work and can affect each other. This would help preventing people to copy other people settings without knowing what they are actually doing. Sorry for my criticism to all the people involved in the project . I know it’s an open source project.
Anyway, a big thank you to you abdo for taking the time to answer my question. I understand it a lot better now.
