I’ve been trying to solve this problem for the last week. No matter what settings I set in a preset, it will still use the default settings for that deck. For example, the default preset has all options in the burying section turned on, in my anatomy preset settings I have them all turned off. However, even when I have the anatomy preset saved for the deck, it will still bury all siblings. This is the same for all settings, from new card numbers to learning steps. This means I am unable to make presets for each deck and just have to change the default settings every time I use a different deck. I tried restarting the program, my laptop, uninstalling and reinstalling, launching in safe mode, no matter what I’ve done the default preset keeps overriding all other presets.
There are a few things that could be making it look like that to you –
- Are you looking at the right preset? Burying and learning steps are controlled by the deck the card is actually in, not by a parent deck you click on to study. Card limits are controlled by an interaction between parent and subdecks.
- Decks/subdecks might not be assigned to the preset you think they are. The first place you can look is the dropdown at the top of your Deck Options.
- Is “Default” used by more than 1 deck?
- Do you have a lot of subdecks? You can use “Save to All Subdecks” to quickly reassign the ones under a particular parent deck. Deck Options - Anki Manual
- Is “Default” used by more than 1 deck?
If it’s none of those things – click on Help > About > Copy debug info – and paste exactly what you get here.

Man thank you so much, I genuinely had no idea the subsets had to be changed as well!
