Data lost after phone broken and login showed empty deck

Hello Anki Support Team,

My phone was recently broken and severely damaged, so I had to change to a new device.

However, when I tried to log in to my AnkiWeb account(this account) on my new phone and via the web browser, all my decks and learning progress appeared completely empty.

I am certain that I used to sync regularly on my old device. I received an email verification link 5 days ago when trying to log back in. Is there anyone could please tell me how to deal with that?

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

The data was removed from your AnkiWeb account in December 2025, after your account had been inactive for at least 6 months. We delete the data from accounts in our system that aren’t being used for syncing or studying, so AnkiWeb isn’t suitable for long-term storage of your inactive collection – AnkiWeb account removal - Anki FAQs .

However that policy only affects the data on our servers. If you still have a local copy of your collection on any devices where you used Anki / AnkiMobile / AnkiDroid, you can upload your collection to AnkiWeb and resume syncing. You should also check your old, damaged device to see if there is any data that is recoverable or can be migrated to your new device.

Generally when data is removed from an account, that includes the server-side backups. However there is one that was retained in your account – from June 2025. [Just like a local automatic backup, that does not include any media attached to your collection.] I expect that version of your collection is older than whatever you could recover from your device, but if you want me to restore it to your AnkiWeb account, please confirm.

Hi Damien,

Thank you so much for your quick reply and for helping me check the backend!

Yes, please! Please restore that version from June 2025 to my AnkiWeb account. Even though it doesn’t include the recent data or media files, it is still incredibly valuable and will save me a huge amount of time from recreating everything from scratch.

Thank you again for saving my study data. I really appreciate your help!

I’ve restored that to your account. On your next sync, be sure you download from AnkiWeb.
