Basic (and reversed card) template not working

I just can’t seem to get the template to work, despite reading all the previous posts and the manual on templates. The reversed cards (“Card 2”) don’t reverse. Here are screenshots of what I have for templates:

Card 2, front and back:

Here’s the browser view, where Card 1 and Card 2 look identical:

And here’s a Card 2 preview, which looks correct.

But even though the preview looks right, the reversed cards are just not reversing in the browser or when I try to study them (whether on Anki app for PC or AnkiDroid)

What am I doing wrong?

You need to understand the difference between notes and cards.

Basically, in Anki, you make notes: the text, images, etc. in the fields form the note. Anki creates the cards for you based on your notes and the card types associated with the note type.

So, while Anki desplays cards in the browser (if the toggle in the corner reads “Cards”), what the note editor on the side shows is the note that card comes from.

More details can be found in the manual.

Thanks for replying. I think I understand the difference between notes and cards. I was trying to generate regular (Card 1) and reversed (Card 2) cards from the same note, using the “Basic (and reversed card)” template. I thought I followed all the instructions I found here and in the manual.

That’s fine, if the browser is just showing the note the card came from. The real problem is that I still don’t have reversed cards. They just aren’t showing up in practice. Where did I go wrong, and how do I know if it acually worked?

Swap these words and the second card will look different. Actually, they didn’t show the first card type, so I can’t say what you have there.

Thank you. @kaiu and @ZornHadNoChoice I did a deeper dive and it looks as though the cards are working as they should - the problem is just that all the reversed cards are coming in at the end of the deck, although the deck is set to random. All the “bury siblings” settings are unchecked.

How can I address that?

From the deck options, you can change the sort order. You probably have “New card sort order” set to “Card type, then order gathered” which sorts the gathered cards by their card type (so cards of the first card type show first, then those of the second card type and so on).

Were the reversed cards created later? You may need to Reposition them to match up with their siblings in the queue. See the “Switching Card Order” video – Card Templates - Anki Manual .

Thank you! Yes, the reversed cards were created later. I’ve got them in random order now the way I wanted, thanks to the trip from @ZornHadNoChoice.
