If one of the folders you saved was the Anki2 data folder – Managing Files - Anki Manual – then you should be able to recover your collection from that. Once you get Anki installed and running again, you can put that folder in that same location, and you should be able to pick up right where you left off.

Hi, thank you very much for replying. I have looked for that folder Anki 2 and I haven’t found it. In which part of the folder of Anki can I find the decks I had in my previous Anki? Thank you

See the link for the default location of that folder. Your data is stored separately from where the app is installed (not in the Anki folder) – so it is preserved even if you uninstall/delete the app.

hi! I have been trying to solve the problem by copying the Anki folders I had before formatting my computer into the new Anki folder I created these days so that Anki continues where I left off before formatting the computer, but I haven’t been able to fix it.

This is the content of the folder I had in Anki folder with my decks before formatting the computer. It’s Windows. Could you please tell me what I should do to recover the decks? Which folder should I copy to the new Anki to recover my decks?

Again, see the link I gave you. The Anki folder is where the program is stored. Don’t copy any of that – you’re better off installing fresh. The folder with your decks is Anki2.

sorry, I don´t speak english very well. I have seen the link you sent me but I don´t understand what I have to do. I must install a new Anki but, how can I transfer my decks to the new Anki? I don’t understand that part. Thank you very much

  1. On your newly-formatted computer, install Anki. This will create a new folder somewhere named “Anki2”.
  2. On your computer, look for the new “Anki2” folder. You can find it by opening the file explorer/manager and typing %APPDATA%\Anki2 in the location field.
  3. On your external hard drive, find the old folder named “Anki2” that you previously copied and saved.
  4. Replace the new “Anki2” folder on your computer with the old, saved “Anki2” folder from the external hard drive.

(If you are having trouble with this, please tell us which step you are having difficulty with: 1, 2, 3, or 4.)

You are looking for the folder named “Anki2” because that is the folder with all your saved decks, media, etc.

Hi, I am having trouble with step 3, Inside the old Anki folder that I copied and saved before formatting my computer, I can’t find any folder named Anki2.

Could it have another name? The version of Anki I had was a bit old; I think I downloaded it in January 2023.

Thank you very much

It wouldn’t ordinarily be inside the Anki folder. That link I gave you in my first response explains – the Anki folder and the Anki2 folder are stored in 2 separate places on your computer. If you didn’t save the Anki2 folder from your other computer, then you don’t have it. If you didn’t sync your collection with AnkiWeb, or save it in some other way, you may have lost it.

mmm so I guess I’ve lost it. Isn’t there a way to extract the decks from the Anki folder if I don’t have the Anki2 folder? I have the Anki folder but not the Anki2 folder. Thank you very much

No, the Anki folder is the files needed to run the app. All of your collection data is stored in the Anki2 folder.

ok, thank you very much for your help
