Anybody else with Samsung phone stopped playing audio recently?

I have multiple Korean decks that have been working for several years but they suddenly stopped working correctly. A reinstall did not fix.

Details: My Note in my decks has three Cards: front, back, and Listen on. Front and Back work fine except they dont play the audio when they are supposed to. The Listen cards normally show a blank screen and just play the audio. Now it doesnt play anything AND I get a ‘Front Card is Blank’message on the screen. The Note definitely has all the same data it has always had and that message shouldnt be there.

I reported this as a bug but they sent me here because they said not enough information for them to troubleshoot

I discovered this on my main phone, S24 Ultra. I remembered that I had Anki installed in my old phone, a Note 8. When I synced that with Ankiweb it worked! It was around ver 2.16 or so. Later, when I was finishing the media sync, I noticed it had autoupdated to 2.22.2 and it stopped working too. grrr, I was going to rely on that until I got the main phone working again.

Please paste ‘Debug Info’ (Settings > About > ‘Copy debug info’) below:

Was this your post as well – Reddit - The heart of the internet ? There’s no need to duplicate your post in multiple places.

Let’s start with the same questions I asked there:

  1. What do you use for your audio? Are they attached audio files, in a particular field of your note? Or TTS tags on your card template that ask Anki to read the word as you study?
  1. Which note type is having this issue? Is this happening for all notes of that type, or just some?
  2. It sounds like this is only happening on AnkiDroid – these same cards work fine on desktop. What version of the app are you using on desktop?

I actually posted it as a bug on github but they sent me here.

Windows version:

Version ⁨24.04.1 (ccd9ca1a)⁩
Python 3.9.18 Qt 6.6.2 PyQt 6.6.1

I’m using the addon for Korean (can’t remember the exact name but it’s the goto for anybody dealing with Korean in Anki. It auto-generates several fields including making an mp3. I just tried out the live TTS and it worked fine but does not handle as well because you can’t choose when it speaks and it tries to say everything.

The Note name won’t mean much to you. It is not a Cloze or have any special fields; just 5 fields; the first four are english and korean (technically Front,Back,Korean,English. The first two are for obligatory Front and Back, the second two are for two field names that the Addon expects) plus another two fields for the (occasionally valid) Chinese (Hanja) and a Sound field that gets auto-populated by the Addon once the Korean field has been exited.

I’m only using this one note type for everything and I have accumulated more than a dozen decks that have been working for several years. The problem occurs on all the different decks I have sampled for this issue.

This all happened about the same time I started editting a new deck in Excel to import. The import worked fine on the Windows app. I can’t say whether there was a cause and effect though.

With the notion that perhaps the decks have been corrupted somehow, I got on my old phone, deleted the account, deleted all of the decks. Then I entered one card by hand, on Ankidroid. For the sound I used the built-in recorder to make a nonsense file. It would not play. In fact, Ankidroid would not even create one of the cards (the ‘Listen’ car) but I think that is a limitation of AD because on Windows the Listen card won’t be created unless the Sound field has an entry, probably some function of the Korean Add-on, which doesn’t exist on AD. Nevertheless, the other two cards ARE supposed to play the Sound field but don’t.

I can’t think of anything causing this problem that point to some issue with the updates to my Samsung OS.

I just turned off auto-updates in Google Play since I only use a narrow range of Anki’s broad capabilities and never run into problems (until now). Then I installed an earlier version from Github (2.18) and IT WORKS (the one card I tested; still waiting for all of the media to finish syncing. If it breaks after finishing syncing I will come back). So for me the problem is solved since there are no advantages for me to go back to the Google Play download. The only problem that could pop up in the future is if Anki Windows somehow updates and screws things up but I don’t see that happening, probably.

Since my simple manual exercise also failed to work, then it should be possible for somebody to recreate the problem like I did; but it HAS to be on a Samsung phone with the same OS or I can’t prove it’s not an OS problem. (it fails on both of my Samsung phones which have wildly different versions of the same OS, one is the latest 7.0, the old phone is still with version 1.0_

Here is a sample deck I just made to test:https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/qltv8449a35z18j2idow7/TestSound.apkg?rlkey=0vo49wa1zy5gfjxd4uefntbze&st=l5sgsm48&dl=0
