AnkiWeb did not sync for past two weeks from AnkiDroid?

Hello,

I got a new phone due to hardware issues with my prior phone, but for some reason the AnkiDroid app in particular did not automatically get installed on my new phone (both Pixels) during the transfer. I did not realize this, and none of the AnkiDroid backup files appear to have transferred either. Of course, I did not realize this until I had gotten home after I had factory reset my old phone for trade-in, so local back-up files are no longer available. I am not certain, but I would think I would have set AnkiDroid to automatically back up to AnkiWeb.

In any case, it now appears that my phone synced to two weeks ago (11/8) when I had last used Anki on my laptop, and I am wondering if it had overwritten AnkiWeb data from my phone. Would it be possible to check for and/or retrieve AnkiWeb data from 11/21 or early 11/22? I did not see any options to review temporary AnkiWeb back-ups from my end and was not sure if this data somewhere still existed.

Thank you!

I can see the AnkiWeb account associated with the email address you used to post here. It looks like you synced a Pixel and a Mac with it today.

However, it doesn’t show signs of being used much recently prior to that. Server-side backups are created approximately weekly on accounts with regular syncing or studying activity – but the last backup for this account was made in July. [That was when you reactivated this account and re-verified your email address, if that helps.]

AnkiDroid does sync automatically by default, so unless you disabled that (or never set it up in the first place), your account should have been active and up-to-date. Is it possible that you have another AnkiWeb account that you were syncing your device with? Places to check –

  • Check your email accounts for confirmation messages you would have received from ankiweb.net.
  • Go to https://ankiweb.net/account/settings and see if you have your credentials saved in your browser/cookies.
  • If you have any other devices you’ve used Anki on, check Preferences > Syncing to see what account they were syncing with.

That is strange. I did use a prior email, but I updated it when I reactivated my account in July. If I try to log in with the prior email, it is not recognized on AnkiWeb (and none of my other emails are either). There are no other credentials in account settings. I have not used Anki on any other devices aside from my old Pixel and Mac in a very long time.

I am noticing on my new download of the AnkiDroid app that it is not toggled by default to automatically sync, though I certainly manually synced it multiple times since July on my old phone. I only occasionally use my Mac, and it has back-up files 10 times since July with the most recent back-up prior to today being 11/8. For almost all of these back-up files, the progress would have been primarily made in AnkiDroid, so I am a bit confused as to how it would not have been done through AnkiWeb as an intermediary. I have been doing new cards daily with reviews without stopping since July.

It sounds like the progress over the past two weeks may be permanently lost? Bummer.

If you send us those email addresses privately – by DM to @ moderators – we can check to see if there are any other accounts.

Syncing can’t happen silently, because the app locks your database to do it. If your old device were syncing automatically, you would have seen it happen. If your only syncing was occasional manual syncing, then AnkiWeb would only have data from the past 2 weeks if you manually synced that data. And it’s possible those manual syncs weren’t frequent enough activity for the servers to trigger the server-side backup process.
