I would like to open a new old topic after https ://forums.ankiweb.net/t/ankimobile-media-folder-access/21181 (sorry that I cannot add link to my post) to contribute to more demand for such a feature.
My use case is as the following:
I have made an Anki flashcard deck for all the words in a dictionary book
I have also made screenshots for each word in that dictionary book, i.e., I have more than 10,000 screenshot images
I would like to use the screenshot images for the flashcard note cards in Anki
The problem by putting all images directly inside .media to take advantage of sync via AnkiWeb is the requirement of putting all the more than 10,000 images directlyon one level in one directory.
Therefore, I would prefer to have images in multi-level sub-directories and sync them manually which requires the access to AnkiMobile media folder.
@dae Besides the solutions mentioned in the referenced thread, I would also like to suggest another implementation idea which is to allow AnkiMobile to link an external directory on iOS device or iCloud (from Apple File Provider) as the media folder to use in Anki flashcard notes. How do you think about this idea?
Yes, without using OCR as I trust printed text book original images (taken from scanned paper PDF file) better. It is also done during the process of reading through the dictionary book.
I’m sorry, subfolders are unlikely to be supported in media folders any time soon. This is a relatively niche requirement, and I’m afraid I haven’t seen the demand needed to justify an inbox feature at this time.
It is exactly the same reason why I started this new thread, as I just worry that if I don’t speak out loud, it would be assumed as no such need. I cannot really prove how big the need for this feature is, but I think it would be very usable for image enhanced flashcards. And this is not a niche use case in today’s digital world considering the images are everywhere as learning materials. People are not heavily using it may just because there is no such function available. I am not trying to challenge your assumption as I also don’t have the statistics to do so. But indeed I saw some clue on the Internet that at least some people have been wishing or wished to have such possibility of having media resources in sub-directories.
Please don’t get me wrong; I appreciate you taking the time to voice your support for the proposal. I just wanted to let you know that it’s unlikely to come in the near future, so I don’t get your hopes up.
