Anki windows install not properly upgrading previous versions

I noticed every version of Anki; 26.5, 26.8, 26.9 are still installed after an upgrade using the new msi installer.

It looks like the product Id or the upgrade code are not being retained so the install is not upgrading properly.

The lastest release broke and not wont run. I am installing for All-Users and now I am gettting a module not found error.

After I uninstalled all instances and installed the latest, the program launches again.

But if the id’s are not preserved this will likely happen again in the future.

Do you have Anki installed to C:\Program Files\Anki? There’s a known issue here that will be fixed in the next patch release.

See Anki 26.09.2 won't start — AttributeError: module 'charset_normalizer.md'

Yes.

I once upon a time was responsible for installshield msi installs, so kind of guessed what the problem was.

If they haven’t figured it out, have them research the upgrade id/guid.

I would give you more but its been more than 15 years since I was even close to an expert with installs.

Ahhh. I see the thread.

Yea. Installshield will track the files between upgrades if the id are correct. It uses the id’s to do a diff during upgrades.

Fun stuff

Windows Installer is really unintuitive. We also had an issue where it was deleting files with lower version numbers (after we downgraded some Python dependency): fix: Force-update all files in the MSI package by abdnh · Pull Request #5613 · ankitects/anki · GitHub
