Anki says to download an update, then freezes my computer

Anki tells me that a new update is ready to be downloaded on my Mac, but when I click “yes” (and I’ve tried a few times), it freezes indefinitely until I reboot. I get the following error message:

An error occurred. Please use Tools > Check Database to see if that fixes the problem.
If problems persist, please report the problem on our support site. Please copy and paste the information below into your report.
