Anki not opening, help I've been trying for days

I recently uninstalled Anki with the intention to reinstall it due to some bugs that I was experiencing. However after reinstalling Anki, I am now completely unable to open the application.

Anki does not show up in the task manager and when running the command %LocalAppData%\Programs\Anki\anki-console.bat, the following message appears:

I have tried completely uninstalling Anki and also holding down the shift button while opening (I do not have any add ons installed).

I am operating on a Windows 11 computer. Does anyone have any tips on how to solve this issue? I have a test in a couple days and really need to start revisioning :folded_hands:

That looks like you’re in PowerShell – I don’t think that %LocalAppData% variable works there. Try running that in cmd.exe instead. Startup Issues - Anki Manual

When you respond with the output, text (in a codeblock) is usually better than a screenshot.

The latest Anki has a new launcher so maybe anki-console.bat is probably obsolete, now there is anki-console.exe instead.

Then it sounds like the command needed would be –

%LocalAppData%\AnkiProgramFiles\anki-console.exe

anki-console.exe is placed together with the launcher, the path should be %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Anki\anki-console.exe

Tried this and managed to successfully boot it after uninstalling and installing! Thank you so much for all the help!

Just to clarify – as of 25.07 (with the new launcher) –

  • There is no longer an anki-console.bat file.
  • It’s been replaced by anki-console.exe– which does the same thing and is stored in the same place.
  • But that place is now where the launcher is stored, not where the rest of the app is stored.

If that’s correct?

Then for Windows, I think we’ll just need to update: Startup Issues - Anki Manual and Console Output - Writing Anki Add-ons . For macOS – unclear, but I’ll add an issue for that too.
