I’m trying to install the Anki desktop app, and it will just sit there for hours with no change. Doesn’t even leave an error message. Not sure how to get around this.
If you haven’t gotten an error message – wait.
It shouldn’t take hours though. You could also close it and try again, especially if it stays like that for a few more hours.
Maybe it would be worthwhile to be more verbose with the launcher, especially this part:
So I can copy that code and paste it in the command console for the launcher?
No. That’s a part of the source code of the launcher. I was saying we should probably update it so that it provides more info about what it’s doing (which would allow us to see if it’s stuck and where it’s stuck). My reasoning is that the launcher shouldn’t freeze at that point. It must be doing something. But we have no detailed way of knowing what it is doing.
You should either wait for a bit longer or close the terminal and try installing anki again.
Ah ok thanks, I’m going to try installing it again right now and I’ll provide an update when I can.
Ok, so I’ve left the install running for the last 4 hours and still on that same screen. There has to be something blocking the check for updates because it shouldn’t take this long.
- Have you restarted your computer lately?
- How’s your internet connection?
- Are you using a ISP/VPN/proxy/etc. that has a particularly generous time-out setting?
I restarted my PC about an hour ago today, my internet connection is pretty good. My download speeds are 274 Mbps rn and I’m not sure what my ISP time out settings are. I have Norton 360 antivirus but I don’t use its VPN.
Final Update: I finally got it installed, the solution was to install it in safe mode with networking. Hopefully that helps someone else if they run into this issue.
That sounds like a Windows setting/mode – is that what you mean?
Yea, I have Windows 11 so when you start your PC you can boot it in safe mode and I chose the networking option which I think is #5 so I had access to the internet. Then I ran the Anki installation file and it worked perfectly fine, probably took a minute to download everything.
