Anki iOS Version and TLS 1.3 Support: Seeking Answers and Solutions

Hello Anki community!

I recently came across an insightful discussion on the AnkiWeb forums regarding the iOS version’s compatibility with TLS 1.3. As discussed in the thread [/t/self-hosted-sync-server-ios-ankimobile-error-9836/34561], it appears that AnkiMobile on iOS currently does not support TLS 1.3, resulting in the error code 9836.

I’m curious to know if there are any plans to address this limitation and implement TLS 1.3 support in future Anki iOS updates. TLS 1.3 is a crucial security protocol that offers improved performance and enhanced security features, making it essential for maintaining a secure connection between devices and servers.

If anyone from the Anki development team or the community has insights or information on whether TLS 1.3 support is on the roadmap, please share your thoughts here. Additionally, if there are workarounds or temporary solutions for users experiencing the error 9836 on AnkiMobile, your input would be greatly appreciated.

Let’s use this space to collaborate, share experiences, and gather information about the status of TLS 1.3 support in Anki iOS. Together, we can contribute to the improvement of AnkiMobile and ensure a seamless and secure user experience.

Looking forward to your thoughts and contributions!

We won’t be able to support TLS 1.3 until the networking library we use supports it. In the mean time, if you’re putting a reverse proxy in front of a custom sync server, you’ll need to make it use TLS 1.2.
