my Anki is incredibly slow since the last update, I’ve tried redownloading the correct version several times and it doesn’t make a difference, I deleted thousands of cards and didn’t make a difference. I am finding Anki unusable as it takes me 10x the time to complete cards. Every button I click takes anywhere from 10s to a minute to load the next page or even just show me the answer. What do I do?
Let’s try to understand what might be causing the slowdown in your Anki. I need a few details to help you better:
- What version of Anki were you using before the update?
And what version did you update to? - What operating system are you using? (Windows, macOS, Linux, etc.)
- Do your cards use a lot of images, audio files, or complex scripts (like LaTeX or HTML/CSS/JS)?
Heavy use of these elements can significantly impact performance. - Are you using many add-ons?
Some add-ons may cause performance issues, especially if they became incompatible after the update. - Have you tried running Anki in safe mode?
This launches Anki without any add-ons, which helps identify if an add-on is causing the problem.
(To open in safe mode: hold down the Shift key while opening Anki.) - Do you have a dedicated graphics card, or are you using integrated graphics?
Also, which video driver or graphics mode is Anki set to use?
(You can check this in Anki under: Preferences > General > Video Driver. Try switching between “automatic”, “software”, or “ANGLE” to see if performance improves.)
