Anki is slow and unresponsive at times

I recently downloaded the new anki version for mac for med school. I have the new macbook pro m4. I downloaded the anking deck as well as smaller decks from my school. First, I had an issue with me clicking browse from the large deck, as it would take a long time to load, so I accessed it thru a smaller deck. Then if I had anki opened for a long time (less than a day) and I was working on a deck, I couldn’t go back to my decks because none of the buttons would work. If I tried force quitting, it would only close after a few minutes. I tried redownloading anki multiple times, and the same issue persists. The only add ons I have is the heat map, ankihub, and amboss. Not sure if I did anything else. I remember deleting an empty card on the anking deck and that was it.

I had a similar issue after updating to 25.07+ on mac. Changing the Video Driver from Metal to OpenGL has fixed the issues for me.

If it’s not the video driver try everything else on the Troubleshooting Checklist – even the things that you think don’t apply.

The Troubleshooting Checklist is definitely the way to go. One thing you can also try if nothing on the checklist really works. In my case I mistakenly installed Intel version of Anki on my M2 machine because my Terminal was set up to launch via Rosetta. This made Anki noticeably slower and the UI sluggish. So you could check via Activity Monitor whether your Anki version is properly running natively (as Apple Silicon binary) or if it is running through the translation layer.
