Anki Destop (Mac) & Anki Website unable to play audio files

Hi there!

I have just recently downloaded Anki to study Korean. My mobile app on my iPhone plays the audio files in the decks I’ve downloaded with no problem, but my Anki Desktop app and the Anki Website will not play any of the audio files. I haven’t added any add-ons. I’ve tried to downgrade/upgrade Anki, I’ve tried to use the user manual provided by Anki, and I’ve tried deleting the app and redownloading it. I’ve checked the preferences and tools tab of the Anki Desktop app (I have a MacBook Air with macOS Sequioa 15.4) and have had no success. The audio files themselves are not corrupt and are all mp3. I’ve checked the audio output, and it is set to my internal speakers. I don’t have much experience with coding, but I have used the debug console with the instructions of other Anki forums on similar audio playing issues, and there is always a result of “None” with no description on how to proceed if your issue persists. The play button for the audios themselves is still on the cards; they just won’t play aloud. I’m really lost and frustrated – I would greatly appreciate any advice or help anyone could provide.

Thanks in advance,

Cait

Could you please confirm, you’ve already run Tools → Check Media in the Anki desktop app and it told you that there are no missing files (“Missing files: 0”)?

On the AnkiWeb site on the https://ankiweb.net/decks page, does the reported “Media:” size figure look correct or does it look like media files might be missing?

In the Anki desktop app Browse window, when you Preview a card does the audio play then? (That is, does the problem occur only when you study/review cards, or does it also occur when you browse and preview them?)

On the AnkiWeb site when you study/review your deck, do you see the audio control UI/widget on your cards? When you press the play button on the audio control, do you see the playhead move from left to right and does the timestamp increase from “00:00” to the end duration of the audio file? (That is, visually does it look like the audio file is being played, looking at the audio control UI?)

On the AnkiWeb site when you study/review your deck, when you right-click on the audio control UI/widget on your cards and select “Open Audio in New Tab”, does the audio file play just fine in the new tab? If not, what do you see in the new tab?

Edit: added: Just a sanity check: With the web browser you use to access the AnkiWeb site, if you play a video (for example, on YouTube) you can hear the audio just fine, correct?

Hi Ben,

Yes, I have no issues with my audio on other websites like YouTube and Netflix. The audios were completely unplayable on both the Anki app and the website, even in card preview. On the website, all the buttons on the audio file on screen were faded as though the file was corrupted in some way. I couldn’t drag the cursor through the file to a certain timestamp–it was just inaccessible. However, I did check, and every single media file was missing. I don’t understand how every single file didn’t sync from downloading the decks on my phone. Regardless, I ended up deleting all of my decks, syncing to update Anki Desktop and Website, and then redownloading all the decks, and all the media files are present now. The audio files play on each card just fine on Anki Desktop, the Anki Website, and my Anki Mobile app.

Thank you for your help and extremely detailed response. I appreciate it so much.

Take care!
