I have issue with Anki Desktop, everything worked fine until today :
I would like to know if it is related to the latest update of windows before trying to uninstall it : KB5048667
I’ve tried the following : 1. Restart Anki
Restarted several time, nothing changed 2. Check add-ons
Nothing changed (only the popup saying skipping automatic syncing) 3. Check your Anki version
I’ve uninstalled Anki, and got the lastest version 24.11
Nothing changed 4. Check your database
Not applicable 5. Restart your computer
Nothing changed 6. Change the Video Driver
Not applicable 7. Reset window sizes
Not applicable
I’ve tried to run the following file, below is the screenshot,
I’ve haven’t heard anything about that Windows update. If it showed up the same day as this started happening, that’s certainly worth looking at.
I find this interesting. If you’re getting to the pop-up, Anki is starting – so it’s crashing after that. In your anki-console startup, it’s already crashed by the time you get the “press any key” message.
When you ran it from anki-console, did you hold down shift to start in safe mode? I’m just wondering if you get any further than that.
I know you already restarted your computer, so this probably isn’t it – but the other 2 things you can check for in task manager are mpv and qt. If one of those is hanging, Anki often can’t start.
There is a list of things to try in the Platform notes, but they are mostly pretty old. I guess the external displays and decimal separator ones are worth trying? Startup Issues - Anki Manual
The same happens to me, on Windows 11. It seems a synchronization problem, since I start in error mode (pressing the Shift key), which skips the automatic synchronization, no problem, but when I want to synchronize, the application crashes. I’m using version 24.11 and tried both q5 and q6.
(Before trying again after crashing, the file mpv must to be finalized)
1. When you ran it from anki-console, did you hold down shift to start in safe mode? I’m just wondering if you get any further than that.
→ I tried both, both way have the same behavior (except for the popup appearing)
2. I know you already restarted your computer, so this probably isn’t it – but the other 2 things you can check for in task manager are mpv and qt. If one of those is hanging, Anki often can’t start.
→ Yes, actually mpv is hanging each time i launch an instance of Anki, i tried to delete tasks and relaunch but nothing happens @Alberto73
→ I never found any “qt” however
3. There is a list of things to try in the Platform notes, but they are mostly pretty old. I guess the external displays and decimal separator ones are worth trying? Startup Issues - Anki Manual
external displays : nothing change
decimal separator ones : nothing changes, i tried both “.” and “,”
4. Do you know if you’ve got Qt5 or Qt6?
I’ve got Qt6, i’ve tried to download older version of Anki both with qt6 or qt5, same behavior… → I believe it is therefore a probleme with the windows update.
Moreover,
I’ve got just once, after the first launch of a newly installed Qt5 Anki version, a weird windows pop-up appearing with, i believe something written like “application autorisation”.
The popup suddenly disapeared and i did not had the time to read what was written on it or do anything about it.
I never seen this ever before… surely linked to the new window update…
I recently fixed a similar issue on a friend’s Anki installation just this week. I diagnosed it by opening a cmd.exe on anki’s directory and running it from cmd. It released an error, something about python. I don’t remember exactly the missing .dll error, but it was something Python related.
I fixed it by installing the latest Python from the official website. I ticked the box asking adding python to PATH and increasing the PATH length limit.
Try installing the latest Python and see if that fixes the problem?
@gnx Thank you, i did not had any error but i tried anyway to install the latest version of python, didn’t help, it may help others though.
@Danika_Dakika :
I have uninstalled KB5048667… and Anki opened up ! (i’ve got the GUI, and it even started to sync)
However, I am using a VPN, and the connection was not established yet, so I have closed Anki, launch the VPN for a stable connection and tried to re-run Anki…
And now, back at stage 0, i have exactly the same issue than before…
I am becoming mad
So it seems that it is not windows update, not related qt, no missing DLL.
A problem with the connexion ? but i have no timeout error or anything … ?
I also tried to deactivate the fire wall but with no improvement
I have Astrill VPN, i de-installed it, and then reinstall Anki.
Anki is now working… But after re-installing Astrill, Astrill was down
I believe there is some odd thing happening at the Connection Layer and those two programs interfere each other… ?
Note that all this happened after updating to KB5048667
I managed to make both of them work like before by :
uninstall KB5048667
Re-install Astrill
(got error 10053 with Astrill : > netsh winsock reset ) → Astrill working
Re-install Anki → Anki working
Though I would like to install KB5048667, do you know if it is now alright ? Should i wait a potential correction of the “interference issue” at the Connection Layer, if it is really that ?
When Anki 2.1 starts up, it listens on a port on localhost for requests from the user interface. If you have a proxy server configured on your machine, please go into your proxy settings and make sure that “bypass proxy server for local addresses” is enabled - otherwise Anki’s user interface will have its local communication redirected through the proxy, which will prevent Anki from functioning.
This problem may also occur if you have a firewall running on your machine that blocks local connections, or are using a VPN that is incorrectly redirecting local traffic.
There’s also a helpful superuser thread inside there that helps solve the problem.
@gnx , thank you for the insight : I’ve excluded Anki process from tuneling via Astrill then.
How to configurate directly and correctly port and firewall is a bit beyond my capacity though
Anyway, I re-installed the windows update, and now everything is fine.
Guess i’ll never really know what happened.
I have followed the same steps, but the sync problem continues on Windows 11. It must be a problem with Windows, because from Android the collection syncs without problems.
Anki 24.11 crashes on Windows 11 when it tries to connect to the server, both to sync and to check for updates. No add-ons are installed, no proxy or VPN.
The only way to get Anki to run on Windows is to disable automatic sync on start and unmark “Check for program updates” option. I can do the synchronization manually, exporting-importing the Anki collections, but it’s a pain… Is there a solution?
Did you check if you have KB5048667 installed? Does removing it make a difference? Does ‘reset window sizes’ in the preferences make a difference? Do you use any VPN, proxy, filtering or firewall software?
I found it. I had installed Astrill VIP app, but haven’t used since long long time. I did uninstalled and Anki can connect now and sync without problems.
