Anki crashes and hogs memory randomly while doing flashcards

Anki crashes and uses up all the free memory randomly while im doing flashcards. It usually happens together with visual glitches like black bars appearing on anki. I have reinstalled anki but it didnt help.

these are my addons and i use the OpenGL video driver. I havent been able to test if the video driver or the addons are the problem because the crashes happen randomly and i dont know what triggers them.

Edit: One time when anki crashed a popup message said it failed to recall memory from C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Anki2

Some background questions:

  • What Windows version are you using?
  • What version of Anki are you using?
  • How frequently does this problem behavior occur? (Once every few hours? Once every week? Etc.)

Here’s one possible set of troubleshooting procedures to test whether add-ons or video driver settings are the issue:

  1. Disable all your add-ons.
  2. Test this configuration for a week (or whatever amount of time you believe is necessary to determine whether the problem is still present).
  3. If the problem does not appear, then it would seem that an add-on was causing the problem.
    • Re-enable just one add-on and test this new configuration. If the problem occurs, then you know that it is this specific add-on causing the issue.
    • If the problem doesn’t occur, re-enable one additional add-on and test the new configuration.
    • Continue re-enabling add-ons one at a time until you discover which add-on is causing the problem.
  4. If the problem still appears with all add-ons disabled then you’ll know that it is not caused by an add-on. (You might want to leave add-ons disabled while you continue troubleshooting the issue, just to make things more simple.)
  5. Change to a different video driver in Anki settings. (Remember to quit and restart Anki to have the change take effect.)
  6. Test this new configuration.
  7. If the problem still occurs, change to a different video driver setting and test that new configuration.
  8. Repeat with all available video driver settings until you find a setting with which the problem doesn’t occur.

If you find that the problem still occurs without any add-ons and regardless of the video driver setting, then you would need to investigate other possible causes.
