Anki cards are completely blank on macOS

Hello

I’ve been experiencing a serious issue with Anki on my Mac for the past several days.

Whenever I try to study my cards, both the front and back appear completely blank. Sometimes the cards take an extremely long time to load, and sometimes they don’t display at all.

The issue also occurs when I create a brand-new Basic card with simple text, so it doesn’t seem to be related to a specific deck or card template.

Interestingly, everything works normally on AnkiWeb, and when I create a completely new Anki profile on my Mac, cards display correctly.

Here is what I’ve already tried:

  • Completely uninstalling and reinstalling Anki.

  • Running Anki in Safe Mode with all add-ons disabled.

  • Switching between OpenGL and Software video drivers.

  • Running Check Database, which temporarily helped, but the issue returned.

  • Resetting the prefs21.db preferences file.

  • Creating a new profile, where cards work normally.

Unfortunately, none of these steps has fixed the issue in my original profile.

Could you please help me identify what might be causing this issue and how to fix my original profile without losing my cards, scheduling history, or learning progress?

Thank you!

I’m hoping that other people might have suggestions.

However, I was thinking it might be worth testing whether exporting your collection or individual decks (with all scheduling information intact) from your old Anki profile and importing them into the new Anki profile might be a way to work around the issue? Essentiallly, you would be migrating to the new profile (which seems to be unaffected by the problem).

That seems like a solution then. If you export your collection as a COLPKG and import it into a new profile, does that work?
