Anki Browser causes everything to lag a lot

I use clozes on articles and books. This results in many clozes in a note and also in a sort field, question, answer columns that have long text. I did read that if the columns have a lot of text it causes these lag issues by browser (see Having a note type with over 127 fields and the "Exclude from unqualified searches (slower)" option enabled causes regular expression browser searches to fail - #2 by dae). If I dont hide the cloumns with long text everything get super laggy. editor also.

When I hide them, everything gets fast.

But if I hide all the columns with text I cannot find my notes anymore when I search, because in browser I only see now the columns named like Cloze1, Cloze2,… and so on

I wanted to ask if there is any fix, setting or addon for that issue? This is really a problem.

If it’s just the abundance of text in the Browser display that is causing the issue, you can use Browser Appearance to be more selective about what is shown in the Question/Answer columns. Card Templates - Anki Manual

You might also consider adding a keywords/summary/glossary field. Then you can use that as your sort-field and it will give you enough detail about the notes.

thx! can you give me an example about being more selective what is shown question answer columns?
I use clozes. And for that I copy for example a whole webpage with an article in anki. I quickly read over it and the stuff that I cloze out what want to reinforce and being able to recall. So my cards are like documents.

short cards I mostly use for learning sentences or single words of foreign languages.

If you had multiple fields displayed on one side of a card, you could narrow down what was shown in the Question/Answer columns – but it sounds like you just have a single field that is overwhelmed.

Setting aside whether that is a good way to create cards [I have my doubts, but you didn’t ask about that] – this may be your problem.

Are you being careful to only paste the text into Anki or are you also bringing all the formatting, links, scripts, etc.? It takes a lot of text to bog down a field/note, but having a lot of hidden code can double or triple the size of your note.

You might consider using an add-on like Note Size to find and fix the worst offenders.

[If you want an example of how bad it can be, I just searched my collection for “inherit” styling, because that’s one that slips past me sometimes. I found a note where I pasted 6 lines of text the other day as additional notes about something, and it ended up 6200 characters – because almost every word had its own pointless span tag.]
