Anki 25.09 identifying itself as 25.07.5 (linux)

I could be doing something wrong here, but it seems that Anki 25.09 is identifying itself as 25.07.5.

Just to test I redownloaded the release and ran the anki executable directly from the new release folder and I see:

$ pwd && md5sum anki && ./anki
/tmp/anki/anki-launcher-25.09-linux
87060f512941486e69fed7471d3e33ef  anki
Starting Anki 25.07.5...

Please see ‘Installing’ on Release 25.09 · ankitects/anki · GitHub

That worked, thanks.

So with the new installer do we still always download and install the package like before and then “Tools>Upgrade/Downgrade”?

Or once we have it already installed can we just use “Tools>Upgrade/Downgrade”?

From the release page on github that you linked to it makes it seems like upgrading always requires two steps.

Also the Anki Manual page just says “If you’re upgrading from a previous package, simply repeat the installation steps to upgrade to the latest version. Your user data will be preserved.” It doesn’t mention the “Tools>Upgrade/Downgrade”

I noticed there is an MR for updating these instructions in the Anki Manual, but it does not include any mention of the Tools>Upgrade step (Issue 427). I can add a comment there if it would be helpful.

You can just use Tools>Upgrade/Downgrade, but you won’t get the updated launcher that way. This should be fine if the previous launcher is working normally for you.
