Anki 2.1.57 Beta

Just as a small suggestion, I wouldn’t label this new section as “Distractions”, the term has negative connotations and seems to imply that activating these features (which only some users find distracting) is a bad idea.

I’d use “More” or simply would regroup these four options under the “General” section.

This issue is still very present. Screenshot (new profile, {{back}} just changed to {{type::back}}, no difference if launched in safemode, backside with nothing typed):

(Again, in this case AnkiDroid only emits the final typeMissed and skips both br & the typearrow.)

In 2.1.57, the buttons are too close to the border.

And if I use any addon that increases the buttons they are broken.

This does not happen in 2.1.56.

Still didn’t get to it, sorry :see_no_evil:

Agreed, but I’d remove the section. Three of those are UI-related and should move into the User Interface box. I’m unsure of what Reduce Motion does so it should go to General or User Interface.

You’re right, that was lazy on my part to not search for a better term.

I wanted to move the toolbar settings into the review tab to make room for the background setting, which will probably make it into .58.

I’ll see if I can find a more fitting location/name for the minimalist checkboxes.

It globally disables transitions/animations.

To me, it leverages the well understood term “distraction free interface” and it’s good to keep them grouped together.

Me too until I noticed the handy tooltip.:+1: My first thought was actually cursor motion (for dumb reasons).

I see two items in that grouping that are clear and specific and two that are a little more vague. What are your thoughts on renaming this item “Disable transitions and animations”?

We took that name from th OS X setting: Reduce screen motion on Mac - Apple Support.

When I introduced the setting I had called it “Disable animations”, but Damien said we might want to keep some essential animations in the future so “reduce” would be the better term.

“Minimalism”?

Yeah, we could call the group Minimalism and rename the mode to “Minimal design” (or plain design) to make its purpose a bit clearer.

Yeah, this could definitely be improved. My first thought was to have the section called “Extras” which would work as a catch-all for anything outside of general/standard preferences.

Instead of Minimalism or Minimalist, I see a lot of other software leaned toward the term Simple when removing advanced features or Compact when narrowing down the interface. In this case, I could see Simple Mode/UI/View or Compact Mode/UI/View working well.

I found a potential UI issue (Qt6, macOS, 2.1.57rc1) it seems like the center part of the browser window is missing some pixels on the left (?) so UI elements look way too close to the left sidebar (see e.g. the Cards/Notes toggle on the top which has no separating pixels at all)

Small issue I’m having with Minimalist Mode. I’m using the Prettify card template and when I have Minimalist Mode (left) on, the drop shadow goes away. I don’t know if this is intentional.

There’s a small graphical issue if you swicht from light to dark mode (or vice versa) while reviewing cards:

I’ve pushed another release candidate for a quick test. Please give it a go, and if no problems are discovered I’ll release this as stable within 24 hours.

Changes since rc1:

  • Fixed the deck options screen allowing you to save values that were blank or out of bounds.
  • When loading deck options during review, values that were missing or out of bounds are reset to the default.
  • Hide the typing comparison if the user hits enter without typing anything.

@dae The text is still very close to the border of the cards.

We’ll hopefully tackle that in .58.
