Aleviate Confussing UX

As a new user, It is very confusing to add to a custom deck.

I’m not offering a specific solution. I’m stating a user need and the context. The user need is an intuitive way to discover how to add a new card. The context is that the Add button seems like it would add a new deck.

I expected to find an affordance (probably a button) within the deck itself, especially if all the cards have been reviewed.

The alternative is learning to navigate things the way they are that very much feels like an app that has grown over time. The mac app feels like it needs a redesign now that it has a bunch of features.

One specific suggestion that would be a short term fix would be to change the label of the “Add” button in the top button bar (which I don’t think is in an intuitive place) to “Add Cards”

The add button, which is more like an editor, can create decks as well, so using add cards wouldn’t make much sense since you are restricting what this tab can do

Buttons are generally simple, direct and one word: Yes, No, Ok, Stop… Which works well for translations, making it two words could lead to unequal button sizes at the top

Custom decks can be imported by: Import > Select Deck (File manager of your system) > Import options

Then would have the button on the middle and top, thus create redundancy, which is something to avoid when designing apps

If you want to remove the buttons on top, then the workflow would change to

Open Deck > Add Cards, but what if you want to open a subdeck (if you have a lot of subdecks)? you would need to scroll down to find the subdeck you want to add, which is way slower than using the editor to change decks/subdecks

When you say “custom deck,” I think you mean a regular deck, not a Custom Study/Filtered deck, right? You can find more about Adding to a regular deck in Adding/Editing - Anki Manual .

That definitely won’t happen because it’s inaccurate. You, as a user, add notes to Anki, and then Anki makes cards from them. You can learn more about that difference in Getting Started - Anki Manual .

very very very very true

Having “Add Notes” button in the congrats screen (when no new cards are there) doesn’t sound bad. Although, I don’t expect it to help new users much.
