I often need to bury multiple cards at once. Currently, in AnkiMobile, the only way to bury cards is from the reviewer while an individual card is displayed. This means that burying a large group of cards requires doing so one card at a time.
It would be extremely helpful to add Bury to the Browser’s existing Actions menu for selected cards.
AnkiMobile already allows us to:
- Search for cards using very specific criteria in the Browser
- Select multiple cards (including Select All)
- Perform bulk actions such as Suspend/Unsuspend
Adding Bury alongside Suspend would allow the same workflow:
Search → Select All → Actions → Bury
I have looked into the underlying Anki functionality, and this does not appear to require new scheduler behavior. Anki’s backend already supports burying multiple card IDs, and desktop Anki already exposes bulk burying from the Browser. In other words, the underlying functionality exists; AnkiMobile simply does not currently expose it as a Browser action.
This distinction between Suspend and Bury is also important. Suspending cards removes them from scheduling indefinitely until they are manually unsuspended. Burying is intentionally temporary: the cards automatically return the following day. For workflows where a user wants to temporarily defer a large group of cards without removing them from normal scheduling, substituting Suspend for Bury is not equivalent.
For example, I regularly have a large number of learning cards from multiple topics. I may want to search for a particular subset, keep the cards I am actively working on available, and temporarily bury the remainder. On desktop this is straightforward because I can search, select the matching cards, and bulk bury them. On an iPad, the same operation can require manually burying hundreds or even more than a thousand cards individually and one-at-a-time in the reviewer. That’s a lot of finger tapping on the single-card reviewer’s Bury card button.
The AnkiMobile Browser already provides almost the entire workflow. The missing piece is simply:
Actions menu → Toggle Bury button
I also found the previous December 2022 request for this feature and Damien’s January 2023 response that it had been added to the AnkiMobile development to-do list. Since this feature does not appear to have made it into AnkiMobile yet, I wanted to resurface the request and add another use-case for why bulk burying from the Browser would be valuable and extremely time-saving.
This would save a substantial amount of time for users who primarily study on iPad/iPhone and would bring AnkiMobile’s Browser behavior closer to desktop Anki.
The screenshots below illustrate the functionality gap.
In the Browser, AnkiMobile already allows multiple cards to be selected and provides Toggle Suspend under Actions. A Toggle Bury action could live alongside it.
In the Reviewer, Bury Card is already an available action. Thus, bury functionality exists in AnkiMobile; what is missing is the ability to apply it to a Browser selection.
