Add Option to Listen with Screen Off (Background Playback)

Hi everyone,
I’d like to suggest adding a feature that allows audio playback with the screen off or while using other apps. Many language learners use Anki to review vocabulary and phrases with audio, and being able to listen passively—during a walk, commute, or workout—would make studying much more flexible and efficient.

Currently, the screen must stay on, which drains battery and limits usability. Background playback would help users make better use of their time and reinforce learning through passive exposure.

I believe this feature would greatly benefit the language learning community within Anki. Is this something that could be considered?

Many popular apps like YouTube, Audible, and Spotify support background playback, and users value that flexibilitet. (also flashcards app) Adding this feature to Anki would make it more competitive and appealing, especially to those looking for a versatile language learning tool.

Thanks for your hard work and a great app!

It should be a opt-in feature if done. I don’t want the answer timer to run when the app is running on background.

Of course it should be opt-in. The idea is for people who want to use Anki like an audio player – e.g. listen to cards while walking or driving, screen off, no need to tap. Timer would only run if this feature is enabled intentionally.

Such features are intentionally excluded, because Anki’s primary volunteer developers consider using Anki while driving to be a risk of causing accidents.
