I think it’s a shame that because of a few individual users, everyone else will lose…
I really enjoy the new design.
Maybe it’s worth spending a survey on it??

@ noty, if I understood correctly, kleinerpirat said it would be an option, so anyone who wants to use the new theme still can. I’m guessing the new theme would still even be enabled by default. But those of us who don’t want to use it would now have option not to. I don’t think anyone will lose with that solution.
@ kleinerpirat Thanks so much for your work on this and for listening to feedback.
I agree. It’s not like there’s been an overwhelmingly negative feedback here. Even just keeping it as option will mean you need to keep supporting it forever.
Most linux users like to have control over their apps (this includes ricing them), and some feel very strongly about this type of choice
dont be disheartened
if the old look was to be brought back, then there are addons which can change the looks of your anki (I dont think that’s the plant though).
The reception to this UI was similar to the views received when the Stats changed (if I remember correctly, people disliked the fact that the pie chart was removed, even though there was evidence which shows that it is not as useful as the alternative…)
how many people look at their pie chart frequently enough for them to have been troubled by the removal of it? not many, i would imagine .
a survey was done on the pie chart back in the day. i cant remember the outcome.
i think with few modifications (such as making it smaller, and giving the linux users the choice to rice their anki 1) everyone will be happy.
Agreed. This is why it would perhaps be wiser to look into rectifying the issues mentioned above rather than keeping an older versions
The old stats can still be accessed in the newer anki… but this isnt receiving support anymore and i think it will be removed at some point.
1: I still dont understand how a user can change the looks of their anki through linux. but it looks interesting…
I will say I much much prefer the old GUI. Perhaps just stockholm syndrome from using Anki for so long, but I found it unintrusive and functional. The new UI is a bit distracting for my liking, and I like having the add card, deck options etc available when reviewing as I often find myself wanting to make new cards when doing reviews
Honestly, I do not think a newer UI should be implemented in the first place. There is an add-on that actually changes the UI of Anki to which users can use and can be heavily contributed by the community that can appeal to the newer generation. Anki should be an app that can be left to the users how they wish to design the app/which functionalities they wish to have–for which users can request on the forums and community can make an add-on to ensure it meets the user’s requirements.
I was hoping 2.1.56 will fix this, but I do not think that fix has been implemented. It was clean, simple, less distracting. Luckily, I do have an add-on that changes the font style, but the add-on only works on the main screen, not on sub-deck main screens or other aspects. If there was a possibility to reduce the interface size to reduce the font and everything, that would be fine as well. It is just that everything just looks way too big for an individual that does not need glasses.
We’re aware there’s a subset of users who like their UI as minimal as possible. 2.1.57 will (very likely) bring a mode for those users to achieve just that.
Please understand the forum does not neccessarily represent the overall userbase, though. Improving the UI and UX is an effort to open Anki up to more people and get rid of the general concensus that Anki is a raw looking/complicated piece of software.
