Unable to upload add-on because my account is too new

Hi,

I’m trying to upload an add-on for a research project, but I get the following message:

Sorry, your account is too new for this action. To prevent abuse, new accounts must meet certain criteria before this action is allowed.

I couldn’t find any information about what those criteria are. Is there a waiting period before new accounts can upload add-ons, or are there other requirements?

Thanks!

Is your intention to “upload” an add-on that you wrote, to share it with other people?

Or, are you just trying to add/install an existing add-on, to use it when you use Anki? If that is the case, “upload” is not the action you want.

(Many new users get confused by this, mistakenly thinking that they want to “upload” an add-on when they actually don’t.)

Thanks! Yes, I mean publishing an add-on that we developed ourselves.

We are researchers conducting a study on learning behavior. As part of the study, participants will be asked to share selected usage data from their Anki database (e.g., review timestamps, response times, review ratings). To make this as simple as possible, we developed an add-on that exports only the data required for the study.

We’d like to distribute the add-on via AnkiWeb so participants can install it easily. I completely understand the anti-spam restriction and the reasons behind it. I was just wondering whether the same waiting period also applies in cases like this? Or whether there is a recommended way to handle cases like this?

I understand why you’re interested in a different process, but there isn’t one. Making exceptions puts us in the position of needing to inspect and evaluate every add-on, which isn’t feasible. [There are a lot of bad actors on the internet, so we can’t just take everyone’s word for it!]

Instead of that, our policy focuses on making sure that legitimate Anki users with legitimate AnkiWeb accounts are able to share their add-ons on our server. See the link for the alternative if no one in your group meets that criteria.
