Unable to delete media off ankiweb

I have 7GB of unused media floating on ankiweb.

Despite manually deleting the media on my desktop

and using the “Check Media” function of Anki

and trying to force an upload to sync these changes

Anki refuses to upload (it doesn’t even ask) and instead downloads from ankiweb. This is in safe mode with all add-ons disabled.

This is on anki 2.1.40 (I’ve tried downgrading to 2.1.35 with no success).

To avoid accidental data loss, you need to wait for all media to download and “media sync complete” to appear. Once you’re in sync with AnkiWeb, you can delete the files, and the deletions will then sync.
