Hello, I am trying to learn Vietnamese using cloze typing cards. Often I have trouble hearing the tones. For example, sometimes I’ll write “bánh” (upwards tone) when instead the answer is actually just “banh” (no tone). Another example is similar vowels, nơm vs nom vs nôm.
I want TTS to read me both “bánh” (my incorrect answer) and “banh” (the field’s correct answer) so I can hear the difference.
Is it possible to have TTS read to me the answer I typed in on the front of the card?
I haphazardly tried a bunch of random things on the back of the card, these range from doing little to actively just being wrong:
I’m not sure that’s possible. But I’m also not sure it’s a good idea to reinforce the incorrect answer by replaying it. [Setting aside that unless you have a really great TTS voice, you might be hearing the wrong thing anyway.]
One way you could come close to this is – if you just want a way to compare common vowel-sound errors – add that word in another field of your note. Then you can optionally decide to have TTS play it when you’ve made that same mistake.
You could even make a special card type for this, so that you can get practice distinguishing between the 2 sounds.
I definitely understand that if the TTS voice is great it could be teaching me wrong anyway.
I’ll make a separate field and for things I want to specially try to hear the difference in, I’ll manually put the wrong version in for that note and see how it comes out.
