No worries sir about FSRS .
I am happy with V3 scheduler
I hope I can use it by December or I will get this issue fixed in coming updates.

It sounds like you’ve already found a satisfactory work around – continue using 2.1.66. It will be up to the devs to figure out whether this is a bug – I can’t fix bugs myself, and I don’t have any influence over which bugs get fixed.
I have the same problem as user Len and wahib.
Used to happen once in a while but now it’s consistent to the point that I either downgrade until I don’t find it any longer or I’m forced to drop anki, because I can’t spend 10min reviewing/editing that the processing popup locks me out and I’m forced to xkill it (I’m on mint xfce 21.3 Virginia, but the same happened on Windows 10).
Maybe it’s an illusion but since I switched to FSRS (2 weeks ago) the problem seems to be more frequent. It also seems to be more severe when I keep my session open for hours (I don’t mean keeping anki open, simply putting my pc on sleep instead of shutting it down, but with anki closed).
To be more precise about the problem, at least on my end it’s not that the processing popup appears suddenly out of the blue; some minutes before it, I start seeing the loading icon next to the cursor appear for a split second even when idle, then again doing any action, then again. When answering cards (I only press spacebar or 1) the same infamous processing popup appears but goes away in 0.5sec. In the edit tab the whole behaviour is more pronounced.
I’ll just add down here all I’ve tried in case it can be of use to others or to the devs, but nothing worked so far for me.
-I checked if my addons needed to be updated
-I opened anki while pressing shift until the message appeared
-I tried the different video drives
-I logged off under ‘syncing’ preferences and lowered values under ‘backups’ to 1440-0-1-0
-I used the renice command to give anki -10 niceness (more priority)
-I checked if I was somewhat out of memory but it doesn’t seem to be the case
-In case the problem was the constant opening and closing of edit tabs, I kept one always open and updated it every time I needed by pressing E
I need more testing regarding the “reset window sizes” button immediately upon entering, I’ll try clicking it every time now.
Others ideas are
-never using Edit ever again, so just using the browse function (but if I remember correctly the same problem occurs still)
-compress media collection/delete unused decks (very little hope in this, I have 17k cards)
-switch to beta version (maybe I’m blind but I didn’t find any more recent than 23.12.1 on github /ankitects/anki/releases )
(I’m using Qt6 right now but I’ve also tried Qt5, same deal. I also tried erasing everything and reinstalling linux mint so the anki files and folders should be considered in the clear)
This isn’t sufficient though. There are a lot of add-ons that haven’t been updated to work with versions 23.10 or later. In some cases the authors are no longer maintaining them, in some cases they haven’t found the time yet because of life’s demands and priorities.
So you should try disabling all add-ons by clicking on them one by one in Tools / Add-ons and then clicking on the Toggle Enabled button, and then restarting Anki. And see if the problem continues.
@wahib mentioned already trying that, but it’s best if you tried it too. It might not be the same issue, after all.
One other thing you could try: open up the Debug Console window using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + ; (semi-colon). You might need to switch to the English keyboard layout to make this work, if you’re using some other layout.
The reason is that if add-ons print some error or warning messages to stdout, they should appear in the Debug Console window output. If for some reason they start printing a lot of messages within some loop, this might slow down execution a lot. So it might be worth a try to check this.
Some change in 23.10 might be triggering a lot of warning messages. Does any output appear in the Debug Console window while the Processing… alert is displaying?
Sir what is this Console window method?
Will it find the root cause of Bug i.e processing?
Kindly elaborate please.
It’s just exactly as it was described. A way to see if add-ons are giving error/warning messages. Miscellaneous - Anki Manual
@no-bark-noonan I’m glad the link helped you get started, but sorry for mixing up the debug console and the terminal window!

Qt warning: The X11 connection broke (error 1). Did the X11 server die?
leo@chocomint:~$
I apologize if the format is wrong. This is all the terminal told me while using anki (I opened the debug console thanks to Danika’s link but it seemed like a tool you actively use by inputting some commands).
Anyway, the first error is because I was offline at the time.
The last Qt warning is when I xkill-ed it, so the appearance of the popup itself doesn’t register a response in the terminal
This time I uninstalled entirely the add-on I had (which is japanese support fyi) and it was possibly the shortest session I had before the popup occured.
If I mistook your instructions please be patient with a noob, and thanks
@no-bark-noonan are you able run Anki from source? If so I can give you a patch to add some extra lines of debug info, which may reveal what’s going on
That is out of my depth atm, but I’ll study around and try it when I feel courageous. In the meantime I’ll do my daily reviews by launching from ~/anki-23.12.1-linux-qt6/anki.desktop where the processing seems to be more patient in general.
I have doubs that this problem is so rare that affects less than a handful of users, but if it is, what are the chances that I experience it both in Linux and Windows? Wouldn’t it suggest that something in my collection makes it go crazy?
All I do besides typing and taking screenshots with the built-in utility is using a ffmpeg bash script I found on a japanese guide (animecards) to record the audio playing. Can some .mp3 recordings pasted from the clipboard do that? It’s such a long shot I might try the lottery next
That’s possible, but I can’t reproduce the issue here, so I’ll either need steps on how to reliably reproduce it, or will need someone who is experiencing the issue to help debug it.
