Anki 26.05 is crashing when display wakes up

Anki 26.05 crashes when display wakes up on windows11-lenovo ideapadgaming3 (ryzen 5 4600H, 16GB memory)

Hi,

I updated to version 26.05 yesterday.

Since then when ever the system wakes up from having the display turned off (i.e 'turn off display after 2 mins but not- shutdown/sleep), I find that firefox, anki and windows explorer has crashed. If it hasn’t crashed, then the system is extremely slow. One such time, I had anki open with browser window and add window open, along with a new-tab open on firefox. Anki was using 8000MB+ of my memory.

(I keep Anki open on the laptop almost always, and sometimes take long breaks before returning to my desk and actively using it.)

The last crash showed a copy-debug information, but laptop was slow and although I clicked copy nothing was present in the clipboard. Does anki locally store the error logs after a crash?

Attempted fixes: updated display drivers (AMD, NVIDIA); checked the system paging file allocation - it is set to automatically manage memory, ran sfc /scannow. (Last crash was after this).

edit1: My Anki preferences has OpenGL set as video driver in the anki preferences since the default (direct3D) sometimes lags, and shows me the image from the previous card.

This was how it looked when the screen woke up.

Another crash.

Task manager showing unusually high RAM usage.

What are your steps to reproduce? E.g. does it only happen if the add note dialog is open? Or also if only the main window is open?

Another crash but not from anki (it says firefox). Maybe the issue is your hardware failing? Or something else is going on.

Does your issue only happen if anki is open at all? If other apps are crashing too (like firefox) anki is unlikely going to be the culprit.

All the 3-4 times it happened was when I left Anki open, screen went dim and I returned after 20-30 minutes. So that should be it?

(Turn screen off 2 mins, never -shutdown/sleep/hibernate, + browser window + add window + firefox? for 30mins+)

Usually I have a browse window open, add window open and a new tab on firefox. I’ve been using it this way for a couple of months now. Hence, I don’t think it’s my hardware?

The screenshot shows firefox crashed yes, but I definitely had Anki running when I left it. (No other app has crashed in isolation, when Anki wasn’t running.)

The taskmanager showing the high ram usage makes me think it’s something about Anki? The laptop was not responsive enough to take a screenshot, which is why I have taken photos on my phone.

edit1: Firefox has not crashed while being used otherwise. Except for one time today when everything slowed down and Anki’s ram usage spiked above 8000MB. That was with Anki open + add + browser. After killing the app through taskmanager and restarting, Anki works fine each time.

Another trouble I kept running into was, sometimes the cursor gets stuck on empty lines (between lines of content; in the same text box) when I try to move it with my arrow keys alone. Reproducing it was hard, but it happens randomly when I try to edit cards I’m reviewing. Pressing the down key on an empty line doesn’t move me to the next line. After a couple of seconds/attempts it works though.

You should go through the Troubleshooting Checklist – Troubleshooting - Anki Manual – especially #2 safe mode, and #6 video drivers. But try everything, even the things you don’t think are relevant.

Hi, Danika. Thanks for the response!
I have tried most of the troubleshooting steps. Anki woke-up fine with the display today morning, on both my attempts to replicate the crashes in safe mode, with video-driver set to software. Since it happens more-or-less randomly, I guess I’ll have to use it like this for a while and see. Will comment if it happens again.

  1. Restarting Anki: In the earlier crashes, post-killing the app via taskmanager and restarting it would work fine.

  2. Check add-ons: I guess I have to use it a couple of days without addons to see if it happens again. (debug info at the bottom)

  3. Checking database: I did that after installing the new version, did it again now. Showed me this response:

  4. Restart my computer: Yes, I did that after updating my nvidia drivers for the dedicated GPU (GTX-1650mobile), after updating my AMD CPU drivers, and after each crash. Subsequent crashes continued to occur in similar conditions each time (waking the display up), but no problems using Anki at startup.

  5. Change video driver: I had it on OpenGL until now, because Direct3D lags a bit (often shows me the render from the previous card). Now I have it set to ‘software’.

  6. Reset window sizes: Did it now.

This happened again, I was able to replicate this whenever I press the down-arrow key from after the last character (in the line above) before the empty line to get into it. The cursor gets stuck everytime, in multiple cards. The arrow keys are working fine otherwise.

  • Was this while you were running in safe mode, with no add-ons?
  • Have you tried the other video drivers (restarting after each change)?
  • NVIDIA cards/drivers are notorious for changing in ways that cause issues with Anki – Search results for 'nvidia order:latest' - Anki Forums . If updating that driver didn’t help, you might need to try rolling it back.
  • Try running Anki from a terminal window for a while, so you can catch the errors that are being logged in the background. Startup Issues - Anki Manual

Just to make it clear, the error I’m talking about is ‘getting stuck on an empty line’.

(Anki did not crash on waking the display today. I had used it half-through the day in safe mode and half without it sparingly using addons.)

Regarding the ‘cursor-stuck’ error:
Yes it happens even on safe mode, with all addons disabled.
Terminal window didn’t show any change when the cursor got stuck.

(‘trying to obtain clipboard’ - was when my screenshots)

But what does it show if you observe the crash?

This terminal output shows that add-ons were not disabled. To run in safe mode from the terminal window, press Shift before you press enter on the command, and hold it down until you see the confirmation message.

Always better to give this to us as text (preferably in a code block, like you used above for your debug info), rather than a screenshot.

I’m going to encourage you to stop doing that. Since you’re having crashes after leaving Anki open when your display sleeps, shutting it down seems like the best way to avoid the crashes.

It’s also meaningful that Anki isn’t the only app crashing. Your system resources seem overtaxed, which is why we were recommending safe mode to eliminate memory leaks in any of your add-ons (or a combination of your add-ons). Your video driver seems to be implicated as well.

If trying to get this working is interfering with your studies, you can also stop trying to reproduce this and roll-back to a version where you weren’t having this problem. Most of the time, a new version of Anki comes with a new version of Qt, the web-engine Anki uses. It’s possible that your system can’t handle the Qt update.

My bad, I meant to say it didn’t crash yesterday. I used half the day in safe mode, and the remaining half using only 2-3 addons. And multiple periods of leaving the display off, Anki didn’t crash.

Running anki-in-safemode from terminal, I got into to the browser and the cursor did get stuck in between lines.

Thank you for responses! I guess I will stop leaving anki on and roll it back if it crashes again.
