My macOS is Sonoma 14.8.7. This most recent version of Anki and the version previous would show the error message “Sound and video on cards will not function until mpv or mplayer is installed” every time I try to play audio on an Anki card. About a month ago, I looked for similar issues and another user was told to download something through Homebrew, however, I tried this and Homebrew does not work on my computer. The only thing that worked was installing a previous version of Anki (it might have been 24 or 25). That worked, sound played normally. However, when I try to open that previous version, it refuses to open and points me to updating to this most recent version of Anki (the one where audio does not work).
Could you please provide some background information?
What model of Mac computer do you have?
What version of Anki are you currently using?
I note that the latest version of macOS Sonoma is 14.8.9. I don’t know if it will help with this particular issue, but you might want to consider updating your computer to it. At the very least, doing so would get you the latest security fixes.
I tried both, audio file was already named libs, changing it either way didn’t do anything. Homebrew doesn’t seem to be supported on my computer, so that was a dead end.
It was worth a shot. Definitely respond to BenJamesBen’s questions too. But the end result might be that you need to downgrade to an earlier version, as mentioned in the other threads.
Updated the computer (it’s a 2019 MacBook Air), the most recent version still doesn’t allow sound to work but I downgraded to Anki 23.12.1 and that’s working fine. I guess the solution was just to downgrade to a version even farther back.
Thank you for that information. I note that the 2019 MacBook Air is an Intel-chip system and is unable to be updated to macOS versions newer than Sonoma.
It sounds like you have found a workaround/solution that works for you. And, because you have an older computer, I am not sure whether it may be that there is no better solution that is possible.
But, if you want further assistance trying to use homebrew, please let us know and provide more information about what problems you had trying to install and run it. (Perhaps I am mistaken, but my understanding is that homebrew should work on your computer, even if it is not officially supported.)
I don’t have a solution, just contributing in solidarity. I’m having the exact issue with the exact same macbook model and everything, I think i’ll downgrade too for now. Thanks for sharing.
Hey everyone, I’ve seen a few posts about this but none of them have helped me. I’ll describe my issue and tell what did not work for me.
So I just updated to Anki 26.9.2, I don’t think I’d updated in a while. After I did this I started getting the message “Sound and video on cards will not function until mpv or mplayer is installed.” when I try to do a card.
I tried restarting. I deleted the entire program and then I tried to download a version a few updates back. I tried to download homebrew to follow someone’s fix method but because I use a 2019 Mac on Sonoma with an intel processor, I couldn’t download it. I also tried to open without launching add-ons but that also did nothing. I know I can go back many updates and probably fix it that way but I don’t want to fix my issue that way since I’d rather keep the program updated. So far nothing has helped.
The last piece of hope I have is that I feel like maybe I could reinstall the player and place it into anki myself without using homebrew, but I don’t know how to do this.
Is there any hope for fixing my issue without reverting to an older version permanently? Please let me know, thank you.
Regarding homebrew, you weren’t able to download it? Or, was the issue that you weren’t able to install it after downloading it? What error message did you receive? I would like to know more details about why homebrew cannot be used on Intel Sonoma systems.
Looking up mpv and mplayer, I see:
Following the links for Mac versions, I see that the last package for MPlayer OSX Extended is from 2018. For mpv, I see a stolendata-built package for Intel Macs from 2024. I’m not sure if either of these are installable or if they might work.
I upgraded to the newest version of Anki for Macs.
