Russian audio is not output

I’m having trouble with the Russian audio not being output when I try to convert from Russian to Japanese. I’m using an iPhone 16.

I think we’ll need a lot more information from you to help you. What are you doing that you think should be outputting audio? What is happening instead of what you expect?

I’ve tried various things, but the settings seem to be working fine. Maybe you need to update your Anki app.

Maybe. But we’ll never know unless you tell us more specifically what you think isn’t working. :person_shrugging:t4:

When I click on a Russian word to display the Japanese word, the Russian sound does not come out.

Nobody here knows what kind of cards you use in your Anki. We don’t know whether they even include any audio files, and if they do, we also wouldn’t know what kind of audio files in which format etc.

Anki is just a program to manage your flash cards. The cards itself are supplied either by you yourself or you got them from somebody else (but again, that somebody else would be a third party and we wouldn’t know about them unless you tell us).

So, either you give us more specifics or I guess you can’t really expect any specific answers, only conjectures at best. On that note, let me try conjecturing:

  • Your cards do not contain Russian audio in the first place.
  • Or if they do, then in an audio format unsupported by iOS.

However, really that’s pure speculation.

We’re making progress! You’ve got a card with Russian on the front, Japanese on the back – and you’re expecting the sound of the Russian word when you reveal the back of the card.

  1. Is this an audio file attached in a field of your note – or a {{tts}} tag in your card template?
  2. When you study a card like this on desktop Anki, does the same thing happen, or something different?

These things will help us figure out where to look for the answer.

Answer:

⇒1.this is an audio file attached in a field of your note

⇒2.When displayed on a computer, Russian sounds are heard.

Based on that, here are some things that could be the issue –

  1. That audio file hasn’t synced to your device yet. See: Media files may take time to sync - Anki FAQs . You can run Check Media on both devices to see if the results match. If they don’t, keep syncing until they do.
  2. The filetype isn’t playable on iOS (as giragira suggested earlier).
  3. Your card template is doing something unusual in the way it plays the media. I can’t speculate which of the many unusual ways that could be, but you’re welcome to show us the template that makes that card.

I tried this, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to solve the problem. This has been happening since I got the iPhone 16…(

I gave you 3 different ideas. You’re going to have to give me more specifics about what you’ve done and found so far.

You also still didn’t tell us any information about the file format being used or your card template, or whether you have successfully performed the sync of all media files. Would be helpful to know, otherwise we’re just back to playing a guessing game.

I’ll go into more detail when I get home today and report back.

No. 1, I followed the instructions on the YouTube video and deleted the Anki deck on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and synced it with the one on my PC, but it didn’t improve anything.

I think the most likely possibility is number 2. I was using the iPhone 12 and 14 as usual, but as soon as I upgraded to the iPhone 16, the sound just stopped working. I think it’s probably an iOS issue. I tried installing a deck in English other than Russian, but just like the Russian, there was no sound.

That wasn’t any of my suggestions. That’s not likely to fix anything.

Okay. Then there’s nothing we can do about it.

If it is really issue no. 2 then you can convert the files to another format like mp3. If that changes their file names you could then use bulk editing to adjust your cards accordingly.
