Question about API access & naming (“Anki Cards” in external app)

Hi everyone,

I am Yacine a med student and i’m currently building a student platform called Hippo, and one of the features is generating study flashcards with AI. Many students already use Anki, so my idea was to let them export these cards directly into Anki.

A couple of quick questions:

  1. Does Anki provide a public API for adding cards directly to a user’s collection, or is the recommended way to generate .apkg files for import?

  2. In my app I currently call the section “Anki Cards” so students know it’s compatible, but I’ve added a disclaimer:

“Anki® is a registered trademark of Ankitects. Hippo is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anki.”

Is this an acceptable way to reference Anki, or should I rename the section to avoid confusion?:folded_hands:

There is no such API. Note collections are usually distributed through files or third-party functionality like AnkiHub.

From what I know, Anki is not a registered trademark as stated (unfortunately).

I certainly repeat myself here, but this shortcut usually contradicts learning.

First of all thanks for your response .

And about this i totally understund why you say that , because its partially true but as a med student here in Algeria i can assure you that this feature would be really helpful because we have a lot of courses and lessons in each unit , and we don’t really have much time to create each lesson’s or unit’s deck , and there isn’t much of public decks available anywhere (because we study in french language)
So i created this feature where an LLM AI can generate anki cards and you can modify your cards as you want or remove what you don’t like , or you can make stuff from scratch too !

When external apps generate Anki cards it is common to use AnkiConnect, an add-on for Anki for desktop (e.g. Yomitan, browser extension). Direct access to AnkiWeb (browser) is prohibited by Anki’s terms of use.

If I remember correctly Anki was trademarked in June of this year so Anki’s competitor apps no longer use the name Anki. Any app or website that allows users to review is a competitor to Anki and I think your platform maybe is, so I think it would be safer or more ethical in the long run to change the name.

If apps and websites impossible to use without Anki and the project is non profit and open source I think it probably has no problem including Anki in its name. (e.g. users prepare their own OpneAI API keys to use AI so there is no paid subscription.)

Well the anki cards part is not included in the paid subscription , so its free for everyone basically
i don’t really want to compete all i want is like to popularize more flashcards and use of anki here in algeria by med students …

otherwise , thanks for ur response !

Happily, that’s no longer the case. After a multi-year process, Anki has been registered as a trademark in a number of countries, and the copycats have had to rename.

Disclaimer looks good - thank you!
