Memorise Poems effectively

Hi all, I would like to find a good way to memorise poems and songs using Anki so I can call them loud in public.

I was thinking that the fastest way to memorise them would be by creating an Anki that would show you the fist sentence and then you have to work out the second one, and from that second one the third one and so on…

But the key in this is that when you fail you go back to the beginning (if the poem is short).

Or if the poem is too long you go back to two paragraphs above so you have to repeat it from there…

Basically if you forgot a sentence you don’t carry on without knowing it first…

Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

There is an add-on to create cloze cards automatically from the longer text: LPCG (Lyrics/Poetry Cloze Generator)

You may want to play a little with the settings, but it should generate the right material for you.

Thanks for this Danika_Dakika (and the others!) I am new in ankiweb… I have downloaded the add-ons in my ankiweb but I am not sure how to activate them or how to understand how they work… same as with the Verse Cloze…

Is there a tool-sample for each add-on (or for the verse Cloze) that would allow me to understand each one? (bearing in ming that I am not a programmer and I am new on this?) something simple that would show an example of how those add-ons would work or how could I apply them…
Thanks!

I usually separate poems into several paragraphs. Within each paragraph I have a template that automatically block words alternatively, once I could repeat all the blocks then I started memorizing the whole paragraphs.

Just to make sure – are you trying to do this in AnkiWeb, the website interface – or in Anki Desktop, the full app?

As long as you’re using Anki Desktop – see the manual for instructions on how to install Add-ons, and how to import shared decks.

In order to use any of these tools – as a beginner to Anki, you will need to first get familiar with the key concepts that the tools rely on – like notes, cards, templates, decks, etc. You will also want to be familiar with Sections 6 and 7 of the manual. The docs are really well written and understandable, so this shouldn’t discourage you. But you’re not going to get far without a solid foundation.

The pages where you found each add-on/deck, will have the best information about how to use it. But to be clear – you don’t need to try all 4! Pick one that you think looks promising for what you want, and just focus on that.

  • LPCG has very thorough documentation of its own.
  • AnkiPoetry is explained by its creator on the reddit post, which also includes links to a sample deck.
  • For Cloze Overlapper follow the link back to the original version of the add-on for the original full documentation.
  • Verse close doesn’t have much documentation – so it might not be the best choice for you to try first.

Probably not very helpful here, but the Bible Memorizer add-on turns the given phrase into the first letters of its words as the question.

Thanks all, still trying to figure out how to keep the same order in the cards and to go back to the beginning when failing, so I can keep memorising the right order of the poem… Must be a way…
Thanks @Danika_Dakika I am using the anky desktop version indeed… BTW I still cannot figure our how to use the Close Overlapper add on and the Verse Cloze or I still don’t understand what they do, any examples?
@cyl how did you do the whole parragraph with several clozes in the parragraph? I assume they would be revealing one at a time? Can’t work that out, sorry…

But the documentation on Cloze Overlapper is pretty thorough, with lots of examples. Have you just not found it yet? The link above is to a current version of the add-on. That page points you to the documentation for the original.

I don’t have any examples over what’s offered in the documentation. If those aren’t documented well enough for you, you should focus on the others.

Thanks @Danika_Dakika … will keep looking into this… Much appreciated
