I’ve made a silly mistake… In an attempt to figure out why AnkiDroid couldn’t find custom fonts in the media folder i’ve deleted it via androids default file manager and synced the deletion to ankiweb and like that i lost all my media today
Later at i’ve found a backup of the media folder and sync’d into AnkiWeb but it was a hopelessly outdated backup that doesn’t contain most of the media used by my notes.
Is it possible to restore state of my media as it was at 05:00 27/07/2026?
Previous similar posts tell me that i should post a private request on anki(dot)tenderapp(dot)com for these kinds of occasions but the website itself tell me that i should post on forums for issues relating to ankiweb so im not sure if im doing the right thing right now.
I’m looking at the AnkiWeb account connected to the email address you used to post here. It looks like about 10K media files were deleted in the past day. Please confirm if you want me to restore those to your account.
Sounds about right. I deleted them and loaded my outdated backup into ankiweb after that time stamp (its in UTC btw) if that lines up with what you see then i confirm.
I don’t have timestamps available in this interface, but that’s in the past 24 hours, so I expect those deletions will be included in this batch. You might get more media restored than you wanted and need to re-delete anything you actually don’t need.
I’m starting the restoration now (so please avoid syncing), and I’ll let you know when it is completed.
The restoration completed – just under 10K files and about 500 MB.
That media will start downloading on your next sync, but you may need to sync a few times until media sync is complete. Then you can do the same for any other devices you use.
Once all of your devices are fully synced, you should run a media check on one device to delete any media you don’t actually need (like media leftover from old decks you’ve deleted). [AnkiDroid: 3-dots menu > Check > Check Media > Delete Unused Media. Desktop: Tools > Check Media > Delete Unused Media.] Then you can sync those deletions to AnkiWeb, and then sync those deletions to your other devices. You can’t start cleaning up the media until your devices are fully synced. If you do, syncing will probably restore those deleted files, and you’ll just have to delete them again.
