Could use Help with File Restoration

Hi there folks, I ran into a pretty nasty interaction with between the better markdown anki extension, and the check media utility that has the potential to wipe out most of the images I have in my notes. I fixed up the markdown image links as part of a plan to clean broken ones, and then ran the check media utility. It then silently synced my newly trimmed down decks to ankiweb, wiping out my entire media collection. I tried to use my phone version to sync back, but managed to mess that up too. Based on my timing, I’d estimate the big file wipe happened at some point between 3:30 and 3:50, probably closest to 3:42 or so. If it’s possible to recover those images, I would greatly appreciate it. let me know what other information or context I can provide to help!

Hopefully you reported this to the add-on author so no one else has to go through it.

Yes, if you have background media syncing enabled, that can happen. But you still have all of those files on your local device. Running Delete Unused only moves the files to the media.trash folder. You can get them back by clicking Restore Deleted in that same window. That will be easier than redownloading them from the server, so try that first, and then let me know if you’re still missing anything else.

Thanks for the quick response and quick thinking. Unfortunately I was unintelligent enough to clear my media.trash folder through the tool as well. :frowning:

While I was able to effect a partial restoration from a partial backup in an obsidian vault, I’m still missing about half the collection. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Not a problem. I can restore the files deleted from your account in the past day. Right now that looks like about 500 files.

Checking a few things first –

  1. I’m looking at the account connected to the email address you used to post here – is that the right one?
  2. Have you synced again since you were able to recover that “partial restoration”? Do you want to do that before I try to restore them on the server side? If so, do that first before responding.

I’ll take wait for your answers to those questions as confirmation that you want me to go ahead with the restoration.

  1. That’s right.
  2. Yes, the image links are all the same, so if I could restore the original files, it would sync up with my cards pretty much instantly. What’s on AnkiWeb is the most up to date, restored version that I can manage with the resources I have. If you can restore the rest, I would really appreciate it.

I’ll start the restore right now and let you know when it’s completed. Try to avoid syncing for now.

It’s finished – 541 files restored, about 50 MB. That will start downloading on your next sync.

It looks like we’re back! THANK YOU!
