Hello. I’m running Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon, and wanted to install Anki. I installed the version in Mint’s software manager, but that was outdated due to not supporting Anki’s new timezones.
I installed the current version on Anki’s website, but that requires glibc 2.36+ to run, and apparently Mint uses an older version. I looked into how to upgrade my glibc, but it turns out that is a Very Important bit of software I shouldn’t mess with.
I turned to the flatpak version, but attempting to install it threw up an error that the connection was improperly terminated when I tried to start downloading it, both via terminal and direct download of .flatpakref. I assume this is because it’s no longer being maintained, as a bit of snooping shows that it’s not actually maintained by the Anki team.
Is there a version of Anki that will run on Linux Mint, am I just missing something incredibly obvious to people who actually know what they’re doing?
You didn’t say which version of glibc you are running. Searching the release notes for “glibc” can provide information about which versions contain glibc requirement updates:
Anki 25.07:
- On Linux, glibc 2.36 or later is now required.
Anki 25.02:
- Linux builds now require glibc 2.35+.
Anki 24.11:
- The Linux package now requires glibc 2.31+ (2019 Ubuntu/Fedora, and 2021 Debian).

Looks like Linux Mint Virginia is using glibc 2.35, according to this. I don’t know how to verify that on my own system.
It looks like the new version, of Mint, Zena, has glibc 2.39. Would that solve my problem? Is the distrowatch site trustworthy?
OH! Those are links. Thank you, this is my first time using this website. I’ll just download an older version of Anki, then.
If you want 25.07 or 25.02, you should get the most recent patch release – so use these links instead.

Yes, updating Linux Mint would fix the issue.
Linux Mint Zena (22.3) is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (codename: “Noble”), which uses glibc version 2.39
Yes!, they are accurate on displaying the package versions of distros
