Increasing retention

I have a Japanese language learning deck that I have been doing for 3 years and sort of lazily for the past year. By lazily I mean just doing reviews, not adding any new cards and not being very strict with grading. I also abused the postpone feature of the fsrs helper addon a lot a few months ago. I don’t have a backlog but I think the reviews are still a bit inflated from using postpone.

As it is right now I don’t think the deck is very “healthy”. I get around 70-75% retention on young cards and 80% on mature cards. Fsrs optimizer also tells me that my recommended desired retention is 0.75 which I’m pretty sure its the lowest it can give you. I want my retention to eventually be around 85% so I have desired retention set to 85%. I also only grade with the “again” and “good” buttons.

What would be the best way to revive my deck?

Some things I’ve considered are:

  • Ignoring the past year of reviews when optimizing parameters somehow
  • Reoptimize and reschedule all cards
  • Start using the easy and hard buttons (if i can?)

My parameters:

0.3513, 0.7353, 2.2266, 4.6607, 5.2568, 1.7868, 0.4408, 0.0550, 1.4674, 0.3787, 0.7535, 2.7449, 0.0248, 0.3437, 1.7603, 0.2272, 2.8755

If you abused the postpone feature, it could revive the deck with tons of reviews.

I’m okay with doing a lot of reviews if it means I can “fix” my deck, Should I do anything else? Or just reoptimize + reschedule?

You can also increase the desired retention.
