Hello!
I have created a few toolbar items and I’d like to save them in order to restore them in case something happens instead of having to recreate them again and again.
I know that they are stored in one of three “collection” files in the AnkiDroid directory. Unfortunately, these files contain other data (for example the card history) that I don’t need.
So, how do I save the created toolbar items only?
Thank you for your help. ![]()
Are they? The main thing with that name is collection.anki2 – your collection database that syncs to AnkiWeb and between devices (see: Managing Files - Anki Manual ). Which other “collection” files are you seeing?
I don’t think they are saved in the database, because they wouldn’t be used on any other platform, and I don’t see them showing up on another Android device when I’ve synced my collection.
I suspect they are saved in the app’s settings, with things like your choices for theme, controls, and syncing options. I don’t know of any way to save those or import them into a new install.

If you’re right, this is worse than I imagined.
Is there a way to suggest a new feature somewhere?
I have three “collection” files in the AnkiDroid directory:
- collection.anki2
- collection.anki2-wal
- collection.media.db
I do not sync my collection with anki web.
It’s a cool suggestion, but I think the bigger issue here is why do you have “accidents” in the first place? I haven’t never had to redo my settings in my non-test collection (as far as I remember).
That’s another version of the database that is open and being written to. Write-Ahead Logging
That’s related to your collection.media.
I merged your other thread here, and moved this to suggestions.
The latest happened when I updated Ankidroid. On opening it I got the "cannot access AnkiDroid directory due to Google change of policy ". I tried the suggested fixes but they didn’t work. So I reinstalled the previous version I was using. I won’t update AnkiDroid in the future.
There are other possible accidents: need to change device, etc.
A simple flle containing all of the settings plus the toolbar items would be highly welcome.

Edit: anyway, there is even no way to save our settings. Wasn’t it possible to do that in the past? Why was it removed?
The storage migration update was done ages ago. I don’t remember the necessary steps, but you should try again or ask here because you’re missing on a lot of improvements to the app.
Other than this, you aren’t going to change the device every month, are you? It’s a nice feature request, I agree, but it’s not that important.
I don’t think backing up the settings was ever a thing, but there’s an issue for it: Feature request: Backup and restore App settings · Issue #9762 · ankidroid/Anki-Android · GitHub .
