Due to some family matters, I haven’t used Anki for a while, and suddenly I found that my account and data have been deleted. It’s a tremendous psychological blow to me! I’ve been using this account for several years, and it contains extremely important materials! Please, could you help me restore my account and data? I’d be immensely grateful! Please! Thank you!
My account is: yi@live.com
Have you checked the devices you used to sync with AnkiWeb? Those should be the first places you check for the most updated version of your collection. Once you reactivate your account, you can sync that to the servers to repopulate your account.
When the data is deleted from an AnkiWeb account, that usually includes any server-side backups. In your account, one was retained – from 16 January 2025. However, I can see that you most recently synced your Windows install of Anki on 17 January (I don’t know the date for your iOS device, it might be even more recent), so restoring that backup would be a step backwards.
Please confirm if you want me to restore that older version to your account anyway.
[Feel free to remove your email address from your message – since you probably don’t want that published on the internet forever.]
I have got a new mobile phone, and the system on the old one has also been reinstalled.Could you please help me restore it to the version from 16 January 2025? I would be extremely grateful if the data can be recovered. Please, I beg you. The data inside represents years of my hard work.
What about the version I mentioned your computer? That is definitely more updated.
My computer’s operating system was reinstalled after a virus infection; otherwise, I would not have troubled you like this.
Could you please help restore my account (yi@live.com) to the last version that contained the data? Thank you very much. These data are truly of great importance to me, as they represent the fruits of my efforts over many years.
I’ve restored that version. On your next sync, be sure to choose download from AnkiWeb.
AnkiWeb isn’t suited for long-term storage of an inactive collection. In the future, make sure you maintain at least one of the devices where you have a copy of your collection.
First of all, thank you so, so much for helping me recover everything. I was deeply moved, almost to tears! No one knows how truly invaluable this data is to me!
Secondly, just to be on the safe side regarding your instruction, “On your next sync, be sure to choose download from AnkiWeb.” Could you please send a screenshot of how to do that? I’m a little worried about making a mistake.
I don’t have a screenshot handy. When you sync, you should be shown a box explaining the one-way sync (triggered by the fact I did a restore on the server-side). Read it carefully.
If you want to be absolutely certain that you see that box, before you sync go to Preferences > Syncing – choose the option to force a one-way sync on your next sync.
I’m really so happy that the data has finally come back. Thank you! Thank you so much! But some images still can’t be displayed. Could you please help me fix this?
Unfortunately I cannot. Media isn’t included in automatic or server-side backups.
If this was a deck you initially imported from somewhere, you might be able to get another copy of the media from there. But if you made the deck yourself, you’ll have to recreate the media or find it if you have it saved somewhere else (check the filenames).
