So I am currently using tags and filtered decks to study. I do a video and then create a filtered that pulls all the cards from the tag associated with that video that are new or due. However I like to sort my anki filtered decks in a specific way such that all the pathoma filtered decks are in pathoma parent deck. Currently I do this by naming the deck something like Heme::Pathoma::video name, and it sorts it well on my home page.
However I have an issue when it comes to syncing and closing anki that the filtered deck basically falls out of the organization system that I have. Does anyone have any ideas or perhaps an add on that might aid this situation.
The names of your filtered decks are unusual: they contain the [ParentDeckName] - [number] pattern. What if you removed that part (and maybe keeping the numbers)?
Maybe there are invisible characters that are messing it up. Can you post an MRE please?
You mentioned on reddit that you sync with your phone. Does the problem occur if you stop using your phone?
in response to 1. I only do that out of desperation I didn’t used to do it. when i only had like three or four different filtered decks and the energy to keep reorganizing the issue would keep happening and they were labelled like this Heme::Pathoma::video name
idk what an MRE is lol?
not quite, it would happen before I even clicked sync on my phone. typically I would finish studying for a bit and sync and this would happen, I would just never sync but I use my phone to study anki on the go. even if I never used anki on my phone syncing or closing out anki causes it to happen
MRE = minimum reproducible example (see Zorn’s link) – but I think between here and the original thread on reddit, you’ve pretty much given us that.
If this is happening every time for you – the problem isn’t how you’re describing it, the problem is we haven’t figure out how to reproduce it yet.
I haven’t been able to reproduce it with your collection so far – using 25.02 on Windows. You’re using version 23.10.1, which is a bit outdated. If this were a known bug from that version, I might be suggesting you update – but there’s no reason to think that would be a solution for you, so there’s no reason to rush into that.
I’ve taken a look at your deck names, and there’s nothing hidden in them.
In your other “after” screenshot from reddit – all of the decks jumped up. I think it’s interesting that in your more recent screenshot above, only the FA decks did. Any ideas what was different?
I don’t know if you’ll be able to answer this question. If you start with the nested filtered deck on your phone and you sync, does the deck jump up the same way as it does on desktop? Or does this only happen when you sync on desktop?
I wonder – is this happening in the midst of the sync, or after the sync? When you notice the change on desktop, can you immediately check https://ankiweb.net/decks – I’m wondering if the deck is also jumped up there already, or if it doesn’t jump up there until the next time you sync (meaning it’s happening after the sync finishes).
While you have taken a look at nikred’s collection, there might still be invisible characters or something weird like that on their machine that got lost after being uploaded to AnkiWeb.
@nikred Try to make a new deck for testing. Give it the same hierarchy then keep doing the same thing that causes the original subdecks to get out of order. Keep trimming it down until it no longer falls out of order. Also copy paste your filtered deck names into any website that reveals hidden characters like View non-printable unicode characters.
That would have to be stored in the database, and it seems unlikely that it wouldn’t remain in the database through syncing. Especially since if it could get lost in syncing, it seems like the problem would also repair itself when syncing.
3- no ideas on what was different its very unpredictable
4- i havent noticed it on my i dont think
5- happens in the middle ive been renaming my deck in a painstakingly different way outsied of the nested decks bc i dont have the time to reorganize them, but will look into that in a couple days!
I will do this and keep you posted, just that the issue doesnt happen everytime I sync and I also almost feel like it doesnt happen when theres not a lot of filtered subdecks, but I have to do this test not on the cards Im using so as to not have to reorganize my studying constantly
