Difference between Settings, Preferences, Options?

I’ve a new question:

Is there a difference between “settings”, “preferences”, and “options”?

Settings and Preferences are the same thing with the former being used in the Android app.

Options refer to deck options, which is different.

There’s some amount of mix-up though in that we sometimes call a option in deck-options setting so there’s that.

Thank you!

[I split this into it’s own topic, because I don’t want it to get lost.]

That’s a great question. Just some basics to get things started –

  1. Settings – Generic term that isn’t the name given to anything in the desktop app.
  2. Preferences – Apply to the whole app. Menu item in the Tools (or Anki) Menu. Related to operational/functional things like visuals, syncing, backups, and what buttons do what.
  3. Options – “Deck Options” apply to a specific deck or group of decks. Related to the card scheduler and the scheduling algorithm, as well as functionality during study sessions.

I missed one thing though: In recent updates to the docs and in-app tooltips, “settings” were changed to “options” where relevant so maybe there isn’t any more instances of options being called settings. Ideally, I think when translating, options do not get reffered to as anything other than an “option”. (edit: okay, there were still some “settings” left in deck options page)

Thank you!
